Dragons rolling to start tourney

ROANOKE, Va. — SUNY Cortland men scored the opening 10 points to get started on a 64-43 basketball victory over Greensboro College in the opening round of the Roanoke College Domino’s New Year’s Tournament Friday night.
Junior big man Mike Lewis led a balanced Red Dragon attack with 12 points and 10 rebounds as the Red Dragons (4-3) cruised into this afternoon’s 3 p.m. title game match-up against host Roanoke (9-1). The Maroons defeated Penn State Abington 106-55 in their opening opening round game.
Greensboro (5-5), which had a five-game winning streak snapped, will play Penn State Abington in the third-place game at 1 p.m. this afternoon.
Junior Paul Oliver finished with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for the Red Dragons, sophomore Ron Evans scored 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting and senior Carson Niehoff added 10 points and five rebounds.
Junior guard Will Coston chipped in with seven points and a game-high six assists in the victory. Senior Juan Miolan totaled six points and five assists and sophomore Steve Manning added six points.
Adam Powell led the Pride, out of North Carolina, with 12 points. Greensboro was held to just 26 percent shooting from the floor (16-of-61), while Cortland made 48 percent of its shots (28-of-58).
That early 10-0 getaway was capped by four points from Oliver, and a Manning 3-pointer with 10:21 left gave the Red Dragons a 19-3 advantage. The Red Dragons led by as much as 23 points in the opening period at 40-17 with 1:12 left and held a 40-22 lead at the break.
Greensboro got back to within 14 points at 43-29 on an R.J. Smith lay-up with 17:39 left, but Cortland scored the next six points on baskets by Lewis, Oliver and Evans. The Red Dragons were ahead by at least 18 points the rest of the game.
