Purple Tigers survive at home

Home-court advantage isn’t a real strong concept for the Cortland High boys’ basketball team.
“We don’t seem to play very well at home,” Purple Tigers coach Mick Lowie said in the wake of his team’s 51-45 OHSL Freedom American Division win over Chittenango at Shafer Gym Tuesday night.
CHS, now 3-4 in the not-so-friendly confines this season, had trounced the Bears 65-36 at at Chittenango on Dec. 9.
Junior guard Jordan Prior led the Purple Tigers with 18 points, including a 9-for-13 shooting night from two-point land (9-for-16 overall), and also four steals. Senior center Trevor Williamson had 14 points and seven rebounds in the victory.
“We did okay defensively, but offensively we don’t shoot that well in our own gym. We got a lot of decent open looks and didn’t hit them. They collapsed on Trevor with their big kid, Mike Major, and doubled him. He struggled a little. We were pretty fortunate, and it’s better than losing, but it’s kind of hard to figure out. We seem to play better on the road.”
Cortland (5-4 league, 8-6 overall) has also been plagued by slow starts this season, having been outscored 203-153 in the first quarter thus far, and that trend continued Tuesday as Chittenango (1-8, 3-11) scored nine of the game’s first 11 points before the hosts came back to pull to within two, 13-11, at the end of the period. CHS then made a run in the second quarter to lead 27-21 at halftime, Lowie noting that the Bears scored all eight of their points late in that stanza.
“We were up by 10 at times in the second and third quarters as well as in spots in the fourth,” added Lowie, Cortland with a 37-29 lead heading into the final eight minutes, “and they were able to cut it to within three points with around three minutes left in the fourth before we pulled away again.
“We were fortunate we had a little cushion to work with for a good part of the game. We also didn’t help ourselves from the foul line, missing some one-and-ones,” said Lowie, CHS going 5-for-13 from the stripe the night. “Our defense kept us in the game; we used a half-court trap the whole game and forced a lot of turnovers.”
Chittenango was forced into 23 turnovers. Chittenango did have a slight 39-38 edge in rebounds, with junior guard Caleb right with a team-high 11 for the Purple Tigers. CHS senior forward Robbie Wade came back after missing two games with an ankle injury — “That gives us a little more depth,” Lowie noted — and added six points and five rebounds.
Major led all scorers with 21 points in the losing effort.
CORTLAND JVs whipped Chittenango 61-39, extending their winning streak to six games and improving to 9-3 in the process. Alex Stacy led the way with 14 points, while Jonathon Prior and Brandon Babcock had 11 apiece. Devin Christopher had 14 points and Mike Scott 12 for Chittenango.
Both Cortland teams visit Phoenix Friday night.
