Though Cortland High’s Maddie Dorward came up with 14 digs to stand out defensively, visiting Jamesville-DeWitt knocked off the Purple Tigers in four sets on Monday.
After three very intense opening sets, Cortland High got off to a bad start in the crucial fourth set and it marked the end for the Purple Tigers in Monday’s OHSL volleyball match against visiting Jamesville-DeWitt.
The Red Rams took the first two sets 25-23, 25-21 at Shafer Gymnasium before Cortland stayed alive with a big 25-23 triumph in the third set. J-D took charge early in the fourth set and cruised to a 25-10 win and a 3-1 overall victory.
The Purple Tigers fall to 6-8 in league and overall play.
“The first three sets of this match were intense,” Cortland coach Cheri Olson said. “Any of those sets could have gone either way. It was really fun to watch.
“Tonight was senior night for these girls and it was disappointing to lose, but they really played well together,” she added. “Unfortunately we dug ourselves too big a hole in the fourth set to come back, though they did try.”
Senior outside hitter Maddie Dorward led Cortland in digs with 14. Senior setter Jenna Gregory contributed with 14 assists and 13 digs while junior Katie Dovi added 11 digs and two aces. Senior Zakarra Butts added eight kills, four digs and two aces while senior Marissa Travis chipped in with five digs, three aces and three kills as junior Megan Howard had nine digs.
“Maddie Dorward was awesome on defense tonight,” Olson said. “It seems as though all of the things we have been saying about defense over the past two years culminated in a defensive show out there.
“Zakarra Butts played well tonight’” she continued. “Jenna Gregory had 14 assists and 13 digs. She is doing a great job this season. Our stats tonight don’t show what a hard fought match this was. For once we were the scrappy team that didn’t let the ball hit the floor. Our passes really were spot on. Now if we want a shot at sectionals we have to figure out how to get those kill numbers up.”
Lexi Lerman led J-D with nine digs and two assists. Other stat leaders for the Red Rams included Laura Wildridge (7 kills, 4 blocks, 4 aces, 2 assists), Jenna Hayward (7 kills), Madeline Alfieris (6 assists), Sonia Narsipur (5 assists, 3 kills) and Kristina Gitzen (5 kills, 2 blocks).
CORTLAND JVs won in a two-set sweep by scores of 25-23 and 25-14. Emma Lang was on fire for the offense with five kills out of nine attempts for the Purple Tigers (10-4 overall). Liza Ferro added five digs and two blocks.
Cortland is off until Jan. 31, the Purple Tigers traveling to East Syracuse-Minoa on that date for their final road match of the regular season.
