CCL Roundup: Cincy boys one point better than Afton

The Cincinnatus Central boys’ basketball team squeaked past non-league host Afton 44-43 Monday night to improve to 3-8 overall on the season.
In another non-leaguer involving a Central Counties League squad, DeRuyter was a 64-57 winner at Manlius-Pebble Hill.
The Cincinnatus girls’ basketball team improved to 5-4 with a 44-39 win over visiting Afton in non-league play. In volleyball, CCL leader DeRuyter is 9-2 overall after a 25-18, 22-25, 26-24, 25-16 non-league win over host Faith Heritage.
Cincinnatus 44, Afton 43: The Red Lions trailed by five, 42-37, with three minutes left but scored the next seven points to take the lead as Travis Rheinheimer scored four straight before Joe Peri nailed a 3-pointer with just under a minute left, was fouled and hit the free throw. Afton then scored a two-pointer with 12 seconds left, the hosts able to run out the clock.
“Numbers can tell the story, and while we don’t always exactly light the scoreboard up the most important figures to our team in this one were holding Afton to 29 percent shooting from the field, committing only nine turnovers and only 13 total team fouls,” said Cincy coach Jim Halstrom. “That’s a nice game. Our rebounding will improve as our team is getting back to full strength and the addition of sophomore JV player Bryant Loomis will give us some more depth off the bench.”
Peri had 16 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead the winners, while Will Loomis had a team-high eight rebounds and was cited for his defense by Coach Halstrom. Cameron Ozwald had 13 points and Andy Sanford 11 for Afton.
Cincy hosts Brookfield Wednesday night.
DeRuyter 64, Manlius-Pebble Hill 57: Kyle Tiffany had 25 points and Derrick Oursler 22 for the Rockets (4-6 overall), who led 13-12 after one quarter and upped the advantage to 31-21 at halftime and 47-33 after three.
Tim Goldman took game honors with 26 points for the Trojans (0-10).
DeRuyter visits Morris Wednesday in another non-leaguer.
IN GIRLS’ BASKETBALL —
Cincinnatus 44, Afton 39: The Red Lions were in control most of the way, leading 16-10 after one quarter, 26-17 at halftime and 37-27 after three, before Afton stormed back to get close in the fourth by stepping up its defensive pressure.
“They were down by only five with 3:30 left, but we managed to keep the lead,” Cincy coach John Rutan said.
“That was as close as they got. They beat us handily both times we played last year, so we feel good about how we’re playing,” he added. “Kaitlyn Schroeder and Jordan Price did a good job defensively and rebounding when we got into some foul trouble.”
Devin Blanchard and Whitney Cobb had 15 points each for the winners, while Kelli Clark was the rebounding leader with 14 of the team’s total of 26. Payton Cutting had 17 points for Afton.
Cincy hosts Center State Conference Division IV leader Morrisville-Eaton Thursday evening.
IN VOLLEYBALL —
DeRuyter 3, Faith Heritage 1: “I thought the girls were consistent in some games and inconsistent in others,” Rockets coach Gary Burdick said. “They pretty much dominated the first and fourth games. In the second the girls got down by 10 and came back, but it was too little too late. The third game was back and forth, with both teams going on scoring sprees.”
Amber Slocum had 13 kills, three aces and two digs for the winners, while Kayla Hampton had four kills, two aces, 19 assists and four digs, Danielle Cuddeback six kills and a dig, Bridget Way four kills, two aces and three digs and Emily Sinesi three kills, three blocks and two digs.
DeRuyter hosts CCL opponent McGraw on Thursday and Tully Friday in a non-leaguer.
