Two mat titles for Trojans
Metzger, Dove go unbeaten at J-E
JORDAN — In what Coach Jeff Lewis referred to as “a good day,” Homer Central wrestlers were a solid fourth among a dozen schools competing at the OHSL Liberty/Patriot Division Championships on Saturday.
The Trojans had 10 matmen in action at the meet hosted by Jordan-Elbridge and eight of those grapplers placed — highlighted by championship performances from Eric Metzger at 152 pounds and Mark Dove at 160 pounds.
The Trojans also had Collin Baker at 99 and Nick Petrie at 145 reach the finals in their respective weight classes, both settling for runner-up finishes as Homer scored 133.5 points to grab that fourth spot in the final team standings.
Cazenovia was crowned tournament champion with 195 points. Liberty Division runner-up, in the dual-meet season, Hannibal was second with 178.5 while the Patriot Division’s Port Byron placed third with 157 points.
“I was happy with the final results. The kids really did do a good job. The triplets did very well and Baker was solid as well,” said Coach Lewis, the ‘triplets’ his nickname for the middleweight trio of Petrie, Metzger and Dove. “Unfortunately, Matt Norris had an off day and that will hurt in in the seeding meeting. He’ll need to work a little harder in sectionals because of that.”
Metzger was 3-0 with two pins in the 152-pound weight class as he runs his season record to 26-6. The junior posted a 6-4 decision over Tial Thang from the Syracuse Institute of Technology in the championship match.
At 160, Dove was also 3-0 with a pair of pins coming in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. The junior scored a 3-1 decision over Cazenovia’s Jake Wilson in the title bout to up his season record to 26-6.
Petrie and Baker were each 2-1 on the day. Petrie (23-12) dropped a 9-2 decision to Port Byron’s Mitch Janes in the title match at 145 pounds. Baker (12-14) lost a 9-0 major decision to Dustin Ouellette of Hannibal in the finals at 99 pounds.
Three Homer wrestlers reached the consolation finals. Jacob Cline placed third at 113 pounds after pinning Cato-Meridian’s Eric Annett at the 2:41 mark of the consolation final. Norris (138) and David Kiernan (220) were both fourth-place finishers. Norris was 2-2 and sees his record jump to 29-8 after 9-7 loss to Cazenovia’s Teddy Kugler in the consolation final. Kiernan (20-11) was 1-2 after dropping a 7-6 consolation final decision to Marcellus’ John Cavaretta.
Bailey Goddard was the final Trojan to grab a top-six finish as the Homer freshman placed sixth at 195 pounds.
Bobby Chambrone (132) and Andrew Schrauben (182) were also in competition for the Trojans.
