Williamson lifts CHS to 10th win

The visiting Phoenix boys’ basketball team couldn’t stop Cortland High center Trevor Williamson Monday night.
The 6-foot-3 senior scored 25 points, exactly half of the Purple Tigers’ total output, in their 50-42 OHSL Freedom American Division win over the Firebirds to avenge a 56-38 road loss last month.
“They didn’t have an answer for Trevor at all,” said Cortland coach Mick Lowie, hits team now 7-5 league and 10-7 overall. “He went to the basket strong and quick, and they couldn’t stop him. We would have liked to get him the ball more than we did, but we played with good intensity, attacked their zone pretty well and overall did a nice job.
“Phoenix is quite an athletic team,” he added. “They don’t have much of an inside presence and are a perimeter-oriented team. Their shooters are fearless. They don’t care if you’re in their face and are good at 3-pointers. Four of their five starters can shoot the ball. They pass it inside just to kick it back out; they’re difficult to defend. We told our guards to stay outside, and they did a good job of making subtle changes on the fly.”
The Purple Tigers led 14-5 after one quarter, but Phoenix (3-9 league, 6-12 overall) came back to grab a 17-16 lead in the second before CHS scored eight in a row (keyed by a couple of 3-pointers by sophomore forward Justin Hogan), ending up outscoring its visitors 11-4 from that point to take a 27-20 lead into intermission.
“It was never comfortable, but we had a good margin to work with,” said Lowie, whose team led 38-32 after the third. “Actually, they ended up hitting a 3-pointer with two seconds left to get within 10 (in the final score).”
Junior guard Jordan Prior had 11 points (to go along with four assists and five steals) as the Purple Tigers’ only other double-figure scorer. Junior guard Caleb Wright had 11 rebounds as the winners got out-boarded 33-31, Williamson with four rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots, Hogan with four rebounds, four assists and three steals and senior guard Will Fickenscher with four rebounds and four steals.
Jonathan North had 16 points and Dorrie Morrison 10 for the Firebirds.
CORTLAND JVs rolled to a 69-48 victory, keyed by a 22-9 second-quarter advantage, as Brandon Babcock led the way with 17 points, complemented by Jonathon Prior with 13 points and Nick Reynolds with 11. CHS has now won nine games in a row to improve to 12-3 on the season.
Nick Mars took game honors with 22 points for Phoenix.
Both Cortland teams visit Fowler Friday in league play, the JV game starting at 5:30 p.m., and in rescheduled contest will now visit Tully Saturday, the JVs getting things started at 2 p.m.
