Mite Bs end up third at tourney

The Cortland Flames UAW 1326 Mite B youth hockey team went 2-2 and claimed third place over the weekend in the Elmira Mite Mania Tournament at First Arena.
The local team beat the Elmira Jackals Mite B squad 6-3 Friday in its first game as Michael Sornberger scored four goals and Alex Giroux and Liam Chase had a goal and an assist apiece. Goalie Izaiah Taylor made 12 saves. Sornberger had two goals and an assist and Giroux one goal in a 6-3 loss to the Webster Cyclones on Saturday, Taylor stopping 15 shots.
Later on Saturday the Cortland squad fell to the Whitestown Wolfpack 3-1 as Giroux had the goal and Taylor made 15 saves. In the consolation game on Sunday, Cortland and Elmira played to a 3-3 tie before Chase and Sornberger scored in a shootout for what ended up a 5-4 win. Sornberger also had two goals and an assist in regulation, while Garrett Breen had the other regulation goal and Taylor made 27 saves in all.
Kyle Gibbons, Kyle Hirschfield and Joel Potter scored once each for the Cortland Flames and goalie Zach Randall made 10 saves in a 3-2 win over visiting Mohawk Valley on Sunday.
The host Homer Logging team beat Center State 7-2 on Saturday. Mike May led the way with three goals and an assist, while Mike Gibbs had two goals, Matt May a goal and four assists and Sean Sullivan one goal. Goalies Gage Eldred and Ryan Gabriel combined for 17 saves.
The Heritage Realty of CNY team clinched at least a share of the Snowbelt League regular-season championship, finishing 17-1-2 in the league with a 4-2 win over the host Valley Eagles on Sunday. Jake Prunier led the way with two goals, while Josh Cargen had a goal and an assist and Adam Jubran one goal. Goalie Zack Wilhoit made 18 saves.
On Saturday, Cortland and host Ithaca 1 played to a 1-1 tie in a friendly contest. Lars Roos had the goal for the visitors, with Wilhoit making nine saves.
Cortland lost to visiting Binghamton 4-3 on Saturday. Adam Buttaccio and Hannah Patriarco scored once each, the third goal not reported, and goalie Riley DeLage made 13 saves.
Cortland lost 2-0 to visiting Ithaca Saturday, goalie P.J. Shager with 20 saves. Sammy Robbins had two goals and an assist while Cole Compagni and Zavien Rosato scored once each on Sunday in a 5-4 loss to the host Whitestown Coyotes. Shager stopped 23 shots.
