Homer girls grab Freedom 2nd spot
A total of four team members earned first- or second-team honors Monday night as the Homer Central girls’ indoor track team placed second among seven teams in the OHSL Freedom Division meet at Syracuse University’s Manley Field House.
First-place finishers earned first-team berths, while runners-up made the second team. No team scores were reported.
Jekeytha Adkins won the 55-meter hurdles in 9.76 seconds, with teammate Jaclyn Yonta second in 9.94 for a new senior-class record. The pair had finished in the same order in sectionals. Adkins also finished second in the long jump at 15 feet-7.25 inches and will compete in that event in the Section 3 state qualifier, and took third at 32-0, a freshman-class record, in the triple jump.
Bori Tozser won the 600 meters in 1:43.41 and will take part in that event at the state qualifier. Tori Lewis was fourth in 1:49.22, a personal best by almost five seconds.
Abbey Gray took second in the 100-meters in a personal-best 3:29.44, while Suzette Strauf competed in the 300-meters for the first time and was third in 46.17. Abbey Phelps was seventh in the 55-meters in 8.60.
The 1600- and 800-meter relay teams both finished third, in 4:24.77 and 1:57.50, respectively. Lewis opened the 1600 with a personal-best 400 leg of 1:03.5, followed by Phelps (1:09.8), Strauf (1:05.8) and Tozser (1:04.6). The 1,600m foursome’s time was Homer’s second- fastest of the season in that event.
Lewis led off the 800m relay with a 30.6 leg, Tozser next at 28.8 followed by Yonta in 29.3 and Strauf turning in a personal-best 28.7 as the anchor.
The Homer boys’ team will compete in its OHSL Freedom Division meet on Wednesday, while Tozser, Adkins and Kindrah Kohne will represent the girls’ team in the sectional state qualifier on Feb. 25, both events also at Manley Field House.
