Mite skaters win Auburn Tourney

The Cortland Flames Mite Travel youth hockey squad went 3-0-1 over the weekend to win the championship of the 2009 Mitey Mite Winter Classic Tournament in Auburn.
Goalies P.J. Shager and Zackery Wilhoit made one save each for the shutout as the local squad beat Rome 8-0 in its opener. Jonathon Frederick had three goals and three assists and Trevor Jubran three goals to lead the offense, while Sammy Robbins and Logan Griffin scored once each.
Robbins and Frederick had a goal and an assist apiece and Jubran one goal in the next game, a 3-3 tie against Valley in which Shager stopped two shots and Wilhoit five. Shager then made three saves and Wilhoit six in an 11-0 whitewashing of Auburn. Trevor Jubran and Robbins had three goals and an assist apiece, while Prunier had two goals and an assist, Frederick a goal and three assists and Rosato and Adam Jubran one goal each.
Cortland won the championship game 5-1 over New Hartford as Frederick had two goals and two assists, Robbins two goals and an assist and Rosato a goal and an assist. Shager made five saves and Wilhoit three.
The Flames squad finished third over the weekend in the state sectionals at Nedrow’s Meacham Rink, missing out on advancing to the state tournament by one place.
Cortland opened play on Friday with a 6-3 loss to Fulton as Casey Bergeron and Alex Rosato had a goal and an assist apiece, Zach Daniels scored once and goalie Zach Randall made 36 saves.
The Flames bounced back to beat Center State 5-3 on Saturday. Dakota Baylor had two goals while Daniels had a goal and three assists, Nick Burton a goal and an assist and Rosato one goal. Cory Broyles made 18 saves in the winners’ nets.
Kyle Gibbons and Baylor scored once each in a 5-2 loss to eventual champion Valley in Sunday’s first game, Broyles with 33 saves. A 5-2 win over Cicero later on Sunday concluded the locals’ weekend as Rosato scored twice, Baylor had a goal and an assist and singles goals came from Burton and Brandon Wood. Randall stopped 19 shots and Broyles 17 as they shared time in goal.
The club’s 19-Under team beat Pawling 5-2 as Cortland’s Samantha Craig scored a goal. Ali Pace of Cortland had an assist in a 4-4 tie with the Cornell Women’s Club team. The 19-Unders also beat the Troy-Albany 16-Unders 2-1 and lost to the Brewster 16-Unders 2-1 over the weekend.
