Foster, Brown join Clarke at state meet

A total of three area high school wrestlers will take part in the Division I state tournament March 8-9 at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester.
Dryden senior Tony Clarke earned the only automatic berth by winning the 215-pound championship at last Saturday’s Section 4 Division I tournament. Undefeated at 26-0, he will meet junior C.J. Floor from Port Jervis of Section 9 Saturday in his first bout at the state meet.
Juniors Dan Foster from Cortland High and Devon Brown from Marathon have been awarded wild-card berths in the tournament.
Foster will take a 42-3 record with 20 pins into the state meet. Ironically, his first-round opponent at 160 pounds there will be Fulton’s Matt Bogardus, who has handed him all three of his losses this winter, one of which came last Friday in the 160-pound finals at the Section 3 tournament. Bogardus, a senior, comes in with a record of 33-0 with 19 pins.
Brown will compete at 125 pounds after finishing as runner-up in that weight class in the Section 4 meet. Brown won a state championship at 119 pounds in Division I last year and will be making his third trip to the state tournament. He will open against junior Matt Cubillos from Section 2’s Guilderland.
