Early outburst key for Dragons

WINTER HAVEN, FLA. – The SUNY Cortland baseball team scored six runs over the first three innings Wednesday and went on to defeat Salve Regina University 8-3. The Red Dragons, ranked 15th nationally, are now 5-3 on the season.
Senior Brendan Rowlands allowed five hits and three runs, two earned, for the victory. He struck out four and walked three. Rowlands was awarded the victory despite pitching only four and two-third innings since it was predetermined by Cortland’s coaching staff that at least three Red Dragons would pitch in the game and that Rowlands was on a 90-pitch limit. He was pulled with two outs in the fifth inning after throwing 93 pitches.
Cortland’s pitchers combined to strike out 11 batters in the game. In addition to Rowlands’ four stirkeouts, sophomore Matthew Martin fanned both batters he faced, freshman A.J. Carney struck out three batters and allowed one hit in two and one-third innings and freshman Brendan Hourihan struck out two hitters in one and one-third hitless innings.
Sophomore Mike Salvatore and senior Paul Merriweather each finished 2-for-4 as Cortland totaled 12 hits, all singles. Sophomore Jason Simone stole three bases. Will Pearce finished 3-for-4 with two doubles to lead Salve Regina.
Cortland scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Simone singled with one out, stole second and scored on a Merriweather RBI single. Kevin Jackson then hit a ball to second base, and Merriweather was safe when he knocked the ball out of the second baseman’s glove as a tag was attempted. After a wild pitch moved up the runners, Andersen Gardner hit a ball that was misplayed to allow Merriweather to score and Jackson to go to third. Gardner was then caught stealing, but Jackson came in on the play.
Sophomore Matt Papillo singled with one out to start a two-run rally in the second. He stole second and scored on a Zach Reynolds RBI single. Reynolds took second on the throw home, went to third after a flyout and scored on an error on a ball hit by Simone.
Salve Regina (1-6) got two runs back in the third on a Patrick Quinn single, a Brandon Bursie RBI double and, two outs later, a Pearce RBI double. Cortland tallied a run in the bottom of the frame when Gardner singled with one out, Nick Faust walked and Salvatore hit an RBI single.
The Seahawks put up a run in the fourth. Alexander Melcher singled with two outs, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on an error. Cortland finished the scoring in the seventh. Simone reached on an error, stole both second and third and scored on pinch-hitter Mike Avery’s bunt single. Steve Nickel’s single advanced Avery to third and Mike Gimblette drove in the run with a groundout to second.
