Marathon’s champs honored in Albany
ALBANY – New York State Senator James L. Seward Tuesday welcomed the Marathon High School Girls’ Field Hockey team and their coach Karen Funk to Albany, where they were honored during the senate session as the 2009 New York State Class C champions.
“The Marathon Girls’ Field Hockey team is synonymous with excellence,” Senator Seward said. “The hard work and determination displayed by the 2009 team continues a growing tradition as the squad captured the school’s eighth state field hockey title.”
Marathon defeated Port Jefferson in the New York State Class C championship 3-1 on November 21, 2009 capping an 18-2-1 season and ninth state title.
The New York State Legislature recently adopted a legislative resolution honoring the Marathon Girls’ Field Hockey team which reads, in part: “Sports competition instills the values of teamwork, pride and accomplishment, and Coach Karen Funk and the outstanding athletes on the Marathon Girls’ Field Hockey Team have clearly set a standard for the spirit of excellence which is a tradition of their school.”
Senate resolution 3593 was sponsored by Senator Seward and adopted on January 12, 2010. Assemblyman Gary Finch sponsored the same resolution, assembly resolution 910, which was adopted on January 25, 2010.
The Marathon Field Hockey team was also named a New York State Public High School Athletic Association Scholar Athlete Team for classroom excellence with a grade point average of 91.977.
The girls are also highly visible members of the community, taking part in fundraising efforts for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and collecting donations for the Marathon food pantry.
“The young ladies of the Marathon field hockey team are fine sportswomen on the field, wonderful students in the classroom and exceptional community ambassadors. I applaud the 2009 team and look forward to the program’s continued success,” Seward concluded.
