Cortland’s Cohen picked top player in East Region

SUNY Cortland senior guard Brittany Cohen has been chosen as the 2011-12 Women’s Basketball East Region Player of the Year.
Cohen also repeated as an all-region first-team selection and is eligible for All-America honors.
The SUNYAC Player of the Year each of the past two seasons, Cohen led the Red Dragons with 15.2 points, 5.4 assists and 1.8 steals per game this winter for Coach Jeannette Mosher. The Jamesville-DeWitt product currently ranks 17th nationally in Division III in assists per game.
Cohen led the SUNYAC in assists per game and ranked third in the conference in scoring, second in free throw percentage (79.9 percent) and second in three-point field goals made per game (1.8).
A starter in all 27 games this season, Cohen scored in double figures 23 times and recorded at least four assists in a game on 25 occasions. She scored 25 points and dished out 10 assists in the Red Dragons’ 70-64 overtime win at Geneseo in the SUNYAC tournament quarterfinals.
In her two seasons at Cortland after transferring from Onondaga Community College, Cohen registered 792 points (15.2 per game) and 300 assists (5.8 per game).
Cortland finished the season with a 16-11 record. The Red Dragons advanced to the SUNYAC tournament semifinals for the 17th straight year.
Joining Cohen on the All-East first team are forwards Jenn Escobido of Ithaca and Hillary McKinley of RPI, guard Becky Hebert of Fredonia and center Jodie Luther of Rochester. The 15th annual All-America team will be released this weekend.
Matmen Scholar All-Americans
SUNY Cortland senior Carl Korpi, along with juniors Jared Myhrberg and Will Parks, have been selected as 2012 National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Scholar All-Americans.
In order to make the team, nominees must have a 3.2 grade point average (on a scale of 4.0) for the previous full academic year. In addition, any candidate maintaining a cumulative 3.2 GPA also receives consideration.
Korpi is an adolescent education — chemistry major. He recorded a 3.26 grade point average over his last two completed semesters and has a 2.99 overall GPA. Myhrberg is a physical education major with a 3.29 GPA over the last two completed semesters and a 2.94 overall GPA. Parks, also a physical education major, entered the spring semester with a 3.65 overall GPA.
Korpi finished the season with a 28-9 record and qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships at 184 pounds. He completed his Cortland career with a combined record of 76-22.
Myhrberg earned All-America honors with a third-place national finish at 197 pounds. He finished the year 33-1 with a school single-season record 17 pins to improve his career record to 78-18. Parks went 17-2 this season, mainly at 184 pounds, and has a career record of 54-18.
Track Coach Patrick in Spotlight
Cortland fifth-year head coach Steve Patrick has been named the 2012 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Women’s Indoor Track and Field Atlantic Region Coach of the Year.
Patrick, who also earned SUNYAC Women’s Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year honors, led the Red Dragons to a conference title and a tie for fourth place at the ECAC Division III Indoor Championships.
The Red Dragons completed the regular season ranked second in the Atlantic Region. Cortland tied for 33rd nationally at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships. The Red Dragons had three national qualifiers and earned two All-America honors.
Patrick previously was named the USTFCCCA Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year in the spring of 2008.
Weekly Honors for Red Dragons
Cortland junior second baseman Lucia Meola and junior pitcher Morgan Kuhn have been named the SUNYAC Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. The pair were also tabbed as ECAC Division III Upstate New York Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week.
Cicero-North Syracuse alum Meola batted .483 (14-for-29) with four walks, five RBI and eight runs scored over Cortland’s first eight games. Kuhn, from Wayland-Cohocton High School, recorded a 2-0 record with a save and a 1.91 ERA in four appearances.
The Red Dragons are currently 6-2 and are ranked seventh nationally in Division III. Cortland will face Lebanon Valley College and DeSales University in single games at Lebanon Valley on Saturday.
— Cortland junior Mike Hughes was named the SUNYAC and ECAC Division III Upstate New York Baseball Pitcher of the Week.
Albany native Hughes compiled a 1-0 record and 0.77 earned run average in two starts for the Red Dragons in Florida last week. He allowed a combined five hits and one run and struck out 20 batters in 11-2/3 innings.
The Red Dragons, ranked 22nd in the latest poll, are currently 7-4 with a four-game winning streak. Cortland’s next game is at Staten Island on Friday.
— Cortland junior goalie Mike Kaminski was the SUNYAC Men’s Lacrosse Goalie of the Week. He helped lead Cortland to an 11-4 win against nationally 14th-ranked Gettysburg at the fourth annual North-South Oyster Bay Challenge in Massapequa this past Saturday.
Kaminski recorded nine saves and five ground balls while only allowing four goals in 58 minutes of action. The Red Dragons, ranked third nationally, have opened the season with three straight victories and host ninth-ranked Stevenson College Saturday at 3 p.m.
