Boice shines for TC3 in baseball split
YAPHANK — The Tompkins Cortland CC baseball team handed Globe Institute of Technology, a junior college Division I squad, its first loss of the season Thursday at Baseball Heaven, winning 10-2.
Globe Institute won the second game of the doubleheader 6-2 and is now 12-1 on the season while the Panthers are 5-5.
Homer Central alumnus Payten Boice earned the complete-game win in the opener, allowing just four hits while striking out eight.
After giving up a first-inning single, Boice kept Globe hitless over the next three innings, giving his teammates a chance to give him plenty of offensive support.
The support started with the first batter, as Kavon Ruffin (Bullard Havens Tech/Bridgeport, Conn.) lead off the bottom of the first with a home run to make it 1-0. A four-run third inning was followed by a three-run fourth put the Panthers up 8-0 heading into the fourth en route to their third win in a row.
Anthony Ferrezza went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Matt Van Allen went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Ty Christian had a double and two RBIs.
Zach Schulte was on base each time he went to the plate, going 2-for-2 with a walk and three runs scored.
The second game started much the same as the first, with the Panthers taking an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first. This time Globe wasted no time responding, plating three runs in the second to take the lead for good and adding two more in the third. TC3 put runners in scoring position in the second and third innings, and again in the seventh, but couldn’t score.
Van Allen went 2-for-4 at the plate, while Ferrezza and Justin Perez each had a double. Aaron Wintermute took the loss on the mound, throwing six innings and allowing five earned runs while striking out five. Mickey Beach pitched a perfect seventh inning in relief.
The Panthers were to conclude their Spring Break trip today with a doubleheader against Queensborough Community College.
