Trojans win big in debut

With a quick start, Homer Central boys were off an running in their season opener at George Butts Field Tuesday night.
Senior midfielder Connor Ferrito netted five goals and junior attackman Aaron Zimmerman added four goals as the Trojans rolled to a 14-3 non-league lacrosse victory in front of a well-chilled hometown crowd.
“It was a nice start for us,” Trojan coach Tom Cottrell said, this the first game for both sides. “We did some good things and we saw a few things we need to work on.
“With only two non-league games, it was a good way to get ready for our league opener Friday,” he added of the home meeting with defending champion Jamesville-DeWitt at 7 p.m. “We look forward to a much greater challenge in our league opener.”
South Jefferson opened the scoring with 8:32 left in the first quarter when Wesley Justice tallied off an assist from Bryan Smith.
It would be the only lead of the night for the Spartans as Homer scored nine unanswered first-half goals to take firm control of things.
Beau Riley tied the game with 7:02 left in the first quarter off a feed from Zimmerman, the first of two assists on the night. Zimmerman put the Trojans on top with an unassisted goal at the 5:52 mark. Hunter Osborne (5:17), Ferrito (4:53), Dyson Sprouse (3:56) and Ferrito from Zimmerman with three seconds left in the quarter gave the Trojans a 6-1 cushion. Homer added three second-quarter goals to created a 9-1 halftime advantage.
Patrick Kiernan and Conner Johnston also scored for the victorious Trojans. Riley picked up a pair of assists, with Ferrito, Casey Cleary and Sprouse also with assists.
Much of the offensive success came from domination at the face-off X. Homer won 15-of-21 faceoffs with Johnston a stellar 11-for-13 in his match-ups. The Trojans also held the advantage in shots 47-18 and groundballs 38-17.
Jonathan Cottrell got the start in goal and the sophomore responded with six saves and just three goals allowed. Matt Male recorded eight saves for the Spartans.
HOMER JVS got off to a flying start with a 15-1 win over South Jefferson at Butts Field.
Brandon Maxson led the Homer scoring attack with five goals and four assists. Jimmy Durkee added the hat trick with three goals, Josh Maxson (one assist) and Chris Brown added two goals each. Jake Gray, Tyler Forshee and Ben Shultis chipped in with one goal each as Eric Metzger handed out three assists.
Will Gorton made six saves in goal for the visitors. Jack Connery recorded four saves between the pipes for the Trojans.
