Homer Central midfielder Shawn Cleary (8) tries to work his way upfield during Thursday’s 17-5 loss at Jamesville-DeWitt. It was the first loss of the season for the Trojans.

DeWITT — While Jamesville-DeWitt showed why they are the defending New York State Class B champions, Homer Central boys saw their undefeated lacrosse ways halted Thursday.
John Clark scored four goals and added one assist to lead the Red Rams to a convincing 17-5 triumph over the visiting Trojans in an OHSL Class B battle of state-ranked teams.
The second-ranked Class C Trojans now stand at 7-1 in the division and 9-1 overall after the initial setback. The Red Rams, eighth-ranked in Class B, improved to 7-1 in the league and 8-2 overall while avenging an early-season 10-6 loss to Homer at Butts Field.
“This was the first time we played someone good enough to make us pay for our mistakes,” said coach Tom Cottrell. “Every mistake we made, J-D turned it into a goal.
“J-D is a very good team,” added Cottrell. “We did not play up to our potential, but we did have scoring chances.”
In fact, the first quarter was very competitive before J-D took command in the final four minutes.
The Red Rams took a 1-0 lead in 11:03 left in the opening quarter as Jeff Vetter netted his first of two goals.
Homer took the lead 31 seconds later when Carl Zimmerman (2 goals-1 assist) scored an unassisted goal. Zimmerman converted a nice feed from Paul Armideo with 9:10 left in the opening quarter to put the visitors in front 2-1.
John Clarke scored his first of four goals as the Red Rams tied the game at 2-2 with 7:13 left in the quarter, but the Trojans responded two minutes later as Bennett Quinlan converted another pass from Armideo for a 3-2 advantage.
The Trojans came close to taking a two-goal lead, but J-D goalkeeper Alex Jorgensen (16 saves) stuffed a point-blank shot during a Homer man-up opportunity.
Michael Edwards (two goals) tied the game at 3-3 with 3:55 left in the quarter with Cam Stone assisting.
The Red Rams took the lead for good when Edwards scored a man-up goal with 2:53 showing with Clarke notching the assist. The home team added two more goals in the final minute of the quarter as Jake Bratek (two goals) and Mac Keehfus (3g-3a) found the back of the net within a nine second span for a 6-3 advantage.
Jamesville-DeWitt continued its goal spurt by scoring five times in the second quarter to build an 11-3 lead before the Trojans got on the board again. The halftime score favored the Red Rams 11-4.
The home team continued to control most of the play in the second half, building a 15-5 cushion through three quarters.
Goalie Paul Zimmerman played the first 32 minutes of the game and made 12 saves for the Trojans when allowing 14 goals. Lance Graffius made six saves in the remaining 16 minutes with three goals allowed.
