Porter shines, Trojans win

Homer Central girls will head into post-season play on a two-game winning streak with a record-setter leading the way.
Emma Porter completed a clean sweep of the career scoring records with four goals and three assists during the Trojans’ 18-4 OHSL Freedom Division season-ending victory over New Hartford on Senior Night Monday at George Butts Field. Homer finishes 5-8 in league play and 7-9 overall. New Hartford is 0-10, 1-11 overall.
Porter holds the career assists (98) and career points (262) records and Monday night the LeMoyne-bound senior added career goals (164) to her list. For the season, Porter now has 40 goals and a single-season school record 40 assists for 80 points, a new career best for her. She needs just one point to tie and two to set a new single-season points record that stands at 81 by Kaylee Benz who set the mark in 2008 with 68 goals and 13 assists.
“It’s nice to have the records, but it’s never been about the records for me,” Porter said of her latest milestone. “It’s really more about the team getting wins.
“The assists mean more to me than the goals,” she added. “That means we’re getting good ball movement and people are getting open. It’s not just me driving and getting open. I really never thought I would catch the (career) goal mark.”
“We really got rolling in the second half,” Homer coach Ed Porter said. “It was nice for Emma because she’s had a very good career, but I was pleased to see the scoring spread out among seven different players.
“The seniors got a lot of time for their final home game,” he added, “We were also able to get everyone into the game.”
After leading 7-3 after the first half, Homer went on an offensive assault for the final 25 minutes. The Trojans scored 11 second-half goals while defensively allowing New Hartford just one goal.
Morgan Hollenbeck added three goals and three assists to the Trojan attack. Emma Gutchess added three goals and one assist while Nadine Downing and Olivia Porter each netted three goals. Logan McEvoy and Natali Partigianoni each netted one goal and dished out one assist. Sara Yonta chipped in with one assist.
Sarah Alvanos scored two of the four Spartan goals. Raeonna Goracy (1 assist) and Alexis Jackson each scored once.
Libby Camp finished the game with six saves in the Trojan goal. Stephanie Cronin recorded 10 saves for the Spartans.
Homer will now await the Section 3 seeding meeting to find out who the Trojans will play in the first round of the post-season tournament.
HOMER JVs picked up a solid 14-4 victory over New Hartford in the opening game of the twinbill at Butts Field.
Carolyne Yonta led the Junior Trojans with five goals and three assists. Gillian McEvoy netted three goals with one assist while Hannah Casey tallied two goals and one assist. Julia Brazo helped out with two goals with Mollie Ferrito (2 assists) and Hannah Shattuck each scored one goal. Kendra Allen made three saves in the Trojan goal.
“Our veteran defense of Alex Contento, Olivia Roos, Mara Nasiatka and Annie Gantt were awesome in front of Kendra Allen limiting the shots New Hartford could even attempt,” Homer coach Geoff Sorenson said. ”Our offense continued to play strong with Carolyne Yonta being relentless going to goal and shooting when it was open, She also did a good job of feeding the ball to her teammates when the defense broke down.”
Homer JVs will travel to Cortland today for a 5 p.m. game.
