Trojan Gregg Class A champ

CANASTOTA — Homer Central sophomore Andrew Gregg won the pentathlon during the Section 3 Class A-2 Track and Field Championship Canastota High School Friday.
Gregg, who posted a winning score of 2,659 points in the five events, and teammate Jackson Randolph will both advance to the Section 3 State Qualifier at Cicero-North Syracuse High School next Friday.
Randolph, a junior for the Trojans, finished a strong second in the 800-meter run.
Sophomore Eric Reisweber was the top Cortland High competitor, placing third in the pole vault at 10-6. Junior Robert Sanders took fourth in the pentathlon with 2,331 points, and sophomore Caleb Wright was fourth in the triple jump at 38-6.
In the team standings, New Hartford took top honors in the eight-team field with 192 points while Cortland tied with Phoenix for fifth place with 22 points and Homer was seventh with 18.
Gregg started off by winning the hurdles in a time of 17.91 seconds. In the high jump, he placed third, clearing the bar at 5-feet-4.5 inches. Next, he posted a third-place finish in the shot with a throw of 30-8.5. Gregg turned in a personal best of 17-11 to win the long jump. Entering the final event, Gregg had the lead in the competition and extended his lead by winning the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:35.29.
After last week’s slip at the start, getting a good start was Randolph’s biggest concern entering the race. He was able to get off to a good start this week. Jackson turned in consistent laps of 62 seconds each to run a personal best time of 2:03.96, which captured second place.
FOR CORTLAND, Reisweber cleared the bar at 10-6, matching the height of runner-up Rick Rossi from Oneida. John Slaven from V-V-S won the event with a height of 13 feet.
Sanders opened the pentathlon by taking fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles in 19.69, and was fourth in the high jump at 4-11 3/4. He won the shot put at 34-2 1/4, was third in the long jump at 16-7 3/4 and took second in the 1,500m in 4:45.57.
Freshman Dyquann Barlow took fifth in the 200m for Cortland in 24.3, while the 1,600m relay foursome of junior Justin Gogan, Dyquann Barlow and sophomore Bayshawn Barlow (his brother) and junior Mike O’Donnell took fifth on 3:54.69. Also finishing fifth, in 48.14, was the 400m relay squad of Gogan, Bayshawn and Dyquann Barlow and freshman Skakief Rivers.
O’Donnell was sixth in the 1,600m in 5:02.40, and Bayshawn Barlow was sixth in the long jump at 18-6.
