Red Dragon Mahay All-America pitcher
SUNY Cortland senior pitcher Michael Mahay out of Whitesboro has been selected to the 2011 American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings Division III All-America third team.
Mahay is also one of seven Cortland players who earned ABCA All-New York Region honors. The left-handed hurler, sophomore shortstop John Adornetto and junior pitcher Aaron Schuldt were named to the all-region first team.
Junior second baseman Matt June and senior pitcher Scott Hartling were second-team regonal selections, while sophomore outfielder Zack Graczyk and senior pitcher Mike Assmann earned third-team honors.
In addition, June was named the New York Region’s ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove award winner at second base.
The Red Dragons (36-10) won the SUNY Athletic Conference title and made their 19th straight NCAA tournament appearance — the longest active streak nationally in Division III. Cortland finished second at the New York regional and tied for ninth place nationally.
Mahay finished the season with a 7-0 record, a 1.76 ERA and one save in 12 appearances, 10 as a starter. In 66-1/3 innings, he allowed 53 hits and 12 walks and struck out 53 batters. Opponents recorded only a .218 batting average against him.
Adornetto led the Red Dragons with a .369 batting average and two home runs and was second on the team with 24 RBIs and 31 runs scored. He recorded seven doubles and six steals and led Cortland with 26 walks and a .478 on-base percentage.
Schuldt posted a 7-1 record and a 2.70 ERA in 10 starts. He struck out a team-high 81 batters and allowed 55 hits and 19 walks in 66 and two-thirds innings on the mound. His batting average against was just .228.
June batted .339 with eight doubles, a triple, a homer, 22 RBIs and a team-high 42 runs scored in 46 games. He was second on the team with 22 walks and 17 stolen bases. In the field, June committed only six errors in 220 fielding chances for a .973 fielding percentage.
Hartling finished the season 5-0 with a 2.49 ERA and one save in 12 appearances, five as a starter. Graczyk was second on the team with a .362 batting and led the Red Dragons with 20 stolen bases. Assmann went 5-2 with a 3.33 ERA in eight games, including seven starts. He walked only six batters, struck out 32 and gave up 64 hits in 51 and a third innings.
— Nine Red Dragons were SUNYAC all-league selections, led by pitcher Schuldt, freshman catcher Tim Panetta, June, junior first baseman Nick Thode, Graczyk and freshman outfielder Adam Smith picked on the first team. Sophomore outfielder Matt Wild, Adornetto and Mahay were named to the second team.
TC3’s Flores Honored
DRYDEN — Tompkins Cortland Community College’s Joseph Flores was named to the NJCAA Region III All-Region baseball team. Flores, who also was named to the Mid-State Athletic Conference all-conference team, earned second-team all-region honors.
Flores, a freshman liberal arts and sciences-general studies major from the Bronx, played in all 28 games, leading the team with a .423 batting average and 11 doubles while playing center field. He tied for the team lead with 26 runs scored, was second with 17 runs batted in, and ended the season with a TC3-record 19-game hitting streak.
