Red Dragons’ Morgan earns top ECAC honor

SUNY Cortland senior midfielder Joey Morgan has been selected as the 2009 ECAC Division III Upstate New York Men’s Lacrosse Player of the Year, while freshman attackman Mike Tota was the Rookie of the Year.
In addition, four players off the national championship Red Dragons (19-20 squad – Morgan, junior attack Brian Krol, sophomore midfielder Chris DeLuca and senior defenseman Luke Lemon – have been chosen to the All-ECAC Upstate New York first team.
With the ECAC honor, Morgan adds to his impressive list of awards this spring that includes first team All-American, SUNY Athletic Conference Player of the Year and New York State Division III Offensive Player of the Year. Morgan finished the season with 31 goals and 14 assists in 19 games. Eight of his goals came during Cortland’s four NCAA tournament games.
Tota led Cortland with 49 goals and 65 total points in 21 games. He finished one goal shy of becoming the seventh player in school history to score 50 goals in a season. Tota scored nine goals in four NCAA games, including four in a second round victory over Springfield College.
IN SOFTBALL, Cortland junior Katie Finch was named the ECAC Division III Upstate New York Softball Pitcher of the Year. In addition, Finch and sophomore second baseman Donnalyn Cross were both selected to the All-ECAC Upstate New York first team.
The Red Dragons set a school record for wins while going 44-9 this season and advancing into the NCAA Division III World Series
Finch, a second team All-American this spring, finished with a 26-7 record, 0.98 earned run average, five saves and 10 solo shutouts in 38 appearances, 31 as a starter. She struck out a school-record 321 batters in 220 and a third innings and threw two no-hitters.
Cross, a first team All-American, batted .401 with four homers, 13 triples, nine doubles, 27 RBI and 51 runs scored in 49 games.
IN BASEBALL, junior first baseman Kevin Jackson, sophomore outfielder Jason Simone and junior pitcher Matt Tone were Red Dragons named to the ECAC Division III Upstate New York baseball all-star squad.
In addition, Cortland 10th-year head coach Joe Brown has been named the inaugural ECAC Upstate New York Division III Baseball Coach of the Year. Brown’s Red Dragons went 31-14, won a fifth consecutive SUNYAC title and made their 17th consecutive NCAA Division III tournament appearance.
Jackson batted .386 this spring with two homers and a team-leading 40 runs batted in. Simone, the SUNYAC Player of the Year, batted .359 with team-highs of seven triples and 18 stolen bases.
Tone, a third team Division III All-American, finished with an 8-0 record and a 3.07 earned run average in 11 appearances, all starts. He allowed 64 hits and struck out 84 batters in 67 and one-third innings pitched.
