Purple Tigers head to Albany
Cortland High will be traveling to Albany today to play in the quarterfinal round of the New York State Class A baseball playoffs.
Section 2 champion Queensbury (19-5) will be hosting the Section 3 champion Purple Tigers (17-4) at 4 p.m. this afternoon at the Plumeri Complex diamond located on the Saint Rose College campus. This afternoon’s winner advances to the Final Four being held in Binghamton’s NYSEG Stadium on Saturday, the home of the Class AA minor league Binghamton Mets.
Queensbury was a 12-0 winner over Section 10 champion Massena in a first round game on Monday held at Clarkson University in Potsdam, as Zack Parsons teamed with two other pitchers on a three-hit shutout.
The Spartans scored twice in the first inning on a Parsons’ run-scoring ground-out and Phil Wettersten’s double. Queensbury took 5-0 lead into the sixth inning, when a six-run rally broke the game open.
Wettersten had three hits and Brett Rodriguez scored three times in the Queensbury victory.
In another first round game in Class A, Section 4 champion Maine-Endwell lost 7-1 to John Jay out of Section 1.
