Central City finds No. 13 to be lucky
It turns out that 13 is a lucky number after all.
At least it is for the Central City Bar & Grill team in the Cortland Men’s Fast Pitch League, after that squad vaulted into second place with a pair of softball wins Monday night at Meldrim Field — 13-9 over Dark Horse and 13-0 over Mr. B’s.
Stone Lounge downed The Tavern 12-7 in the night’s other game on the Cortlandville diamond.
Central City 13, Dark Horse 9: Morgan DuBois went 4-for-5 with a home run, five RBIs and three runs scored to lead the winners’ 15-hit attack. Greg Newkirk went 3-for-3 and scored twice, while Tab Carmon went 2-for-2 with two triples, two RBIs and a run, Jeff Kaltenbach 2-for-3 with a run and Nick Triolo 2-for-4 with a double.
Winning pitcher Josh Zach threw an eight-hitter with five strikeouts. Dennis Hopkins led the way for Dark Horse, going 3-for-5 with a double and two runs, while Roger Karn went 2-for-3 with a run, T.J. Griffin hit a homer and collected three RBIs with a run and Waylon DeGraw tripled and also had three RBIs and a run.
Central City 13, Mr. B’s 0: Mike Lowie threw a two-hitter and fanned five Mr. B’s batter while his teammates collected 15 hits, nine of them for extra bases. DuBois went 2-for-3 with a homer, double, two RBIs and two runs, while Matt Cobb was 2-for-2 with two doubles, an RBI and two runs, Newkirk 2-for-3 with a homer, two RBIs and a run and Carmon 2-for-3 with a run. Al Ondrako had a homer, two RBIs and a run while Zach had a solo homer, Triolo had a double, an RBI and a run and Lowie a double and a run.
Trevor Bush and Tony Caravella had the hits for Mr. B’s.
Stone Lounge 12, The Tavern 7: Andrew Mead went 4-for-4, hitting for the cycle with three RBIs and three runs, to lead The Tavern. Abe Johnson went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs, while Brandon Galutz was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and a run, winning pitcher Dick Meldrim 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run and Aaron Galutz 2-for-4 with a run.
Brian Taylor went 4-for-4 with a triple, double, two RBIs and two runs for The Tavern, while Mike Avery was 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs. Tom Avery (homer, RBI, three runs) and Mike Holl (two RBIs) both went 2-for-4.
