Horner hero in Gator’s victory

Steve Horner went 5-for-5 with two doubles Sunday as Gator’s Tavern improved to 4-0 and increased its lead in the Cortland Over-35 Men’s Slow Pitch Softball league by downing Friends/JT Fence 16-6.
In the other contest, The Tavern notched its first win of the season with a 12-4 victory over Hairy Tony’s/Paddy’s Pub.
Gator’s Tavern 16, Friends/JT Fence 6: After grabbing a 4-2 lead through one inning, Gator’s pulled away with six runs in the top of the second and four more runs in the third. The lead was 16-2 before Friends (2-2) scored its final four runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Dick Arnold added a 4-for-5 bat to the Gator’s offense while Steve Young, Andy Moore, Mark Waterson and Randy Arnold (triple) each collected three hits.
Tom Cullip (triple), Jim Grant and Chuck Chawgo, Jr. delivered three hits each for Friends/JT Fence.
The Tavern 12, Hairy Tony’s/Paddy’s Pub 4: The Tavern (1-3) scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning to take overcome a 4-3 deficit and never trailed again. Ed Pickert led the offense by going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. J. Sawyer added a 2-for-3 bat to the winning line-up.
Pat Casselbury led the Hairy Tony’s/ Paddy’s Pub offense with a two-run homer.

Farm Team scores pair of victories

Farm Team posted a pair of wins during Duke Erickson Co-Ed Softball Fun League action Sunday. The Farm Team dumped the Extinguishers 32-16 in a six-inning game during handing Builders Best a 15-3 defeat later in the day.
Farm Team 32, Extinguishers 16: After the Extinguishers took a 3-1 lead in the first inning, Farm Team plated 14 runs in the top of the second, only to have the Extinguishers countered with eight runs in the bottom of the inning. Farm Team continued to pound the ball over the next four innings while tightening up on its defense.
Jeremy Devereese hit a double and home run for the winners while Dave Phillipps, Oyer and Ryan Pennallo each added doubles. M. Hall hit a double and home run for Extinguishers.
Farm Team 15, Builders Best 3: Steve Phillips hit four doubles and Farm Team built a 10-0 lead over the first five innings. Devereese ripped a triple for Farm Team while G. Vestal and B. Phillips each added doubles.
Brull hit a double for Builders Best.
