Two contenders sweep past foes

Paddy’s Pub/Cortland Carpet and Gator’s Tavern were smiling twice on Sunday after both picked up a pair of softball wins in the Cortland Bob Schlenker Memorial Over 35 Slow Pitch League.
While pounding out a total of 66 hits, Paddy’s Pub/Cortland Carpet rolled past Preble Hotel 28-8 and then defeated Chuck’s Boys 23-9 to improve to 5-1 on the season. Gator’s blasted Preble Hotel 28-3 and then trimmed The Tavern 11-10 in its two outings and is also 5-1.
Red Dragon (5-1) kept pace with the leaders by coming on strong in the late innings to overtake Woodman’s Pub for an 11-8 victory.
Paddy’s/Cortland Carpet 23, Chuck’s Boys 9: A 29-hit ambush featured Ed Kelly going 4-for-5 with a triple. Seven other players had three-hit success, Mitch Thurston going 3-for-6 with a pair of doubles while Jim Stanton was 3-for-5 with a two-bagger. Chuck Chawgo drove in three runs for Chuck’s Boys.
Paddy’s Pub/Cortland Carpet 28, Preble Hotel 8: In a 37-hit assault, Paddy’s Pub/Cortland Carpet continued its scoring spree. Swinging perfect bats for the winners were Mitch Thurston going 5-for-5 with a triple and Tony Mooney with a 3-for-3 bat that drove in six runs and also tripled. Elliott Mitro topped Preble Hotel, going 4-for-4 with a triple, while Art Buchanan Jr. homered.
Gator’s 28, Preble Hotel 3: Winning pitcher Frank Tibke slugged a home run and added a triple to the winner’s 37-hit offense. Dicky Arnold (5-for-5) and Paul Klinger (4-for-4) were perfect at the plate, while Steve Horner and Andy Moore added four-hit success.
Gator’s 11, The Tavern 10: A seven-run rally in the top of the sixth inning gave Gator’s enough of a working margin to hold off The Tavern as Tibke, Arnold and Gary Talbot were all 3-for-4.
Red Dragon 11, Woodman’s Pub 8: This game was deadlocked at 7-7 when a four-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning put Red Dragon ahead for keeps, a three-run double off the bat of Mark Harrington (3x3) the big blow. Harrington drove in four runs on the day, while Mike Twomey (3x3), Ed Lincoln (3x4) and Ken Morgan (3x4, 3 RBIs) also had big days.
Matt Riter and Brokaw had three-hit outings for Woodman’s Pub.
