Locals shine on all-state diamond squad
A total of seven local players earned honors in their respective classes on the 2012 New York State Sports Writers Association’s All-State baseball team.
Representing Cortland High in Class A are junior pitcher-first baseman-outfielder Brian Hughes, who made the fifth team, and senior designated hitter Jonathan Prior, who was picked for the eighth team.
Hughes batted .370 with four doubles, three triples and one home run, a team-high 20 RBIs and 18 runs scored (tied for team-best) while posting a 1.31 earned run average with 66 strikeouts in 48 innings of mound work for the Purple Tigers this season. Prior, who also played in the outfield, had a team-high .487 batting average, led CHS in doubles with five and had two triples, 10 RBIs, 13 runs scored and eight stolen bases
In Class B, Homer Central placed senior third baseman Brent Quinlan on the third team and junior pitcher Payten Boice on the sixth team.
Quinlan had the second best batting average in school history for the Trojans this season, finishing at .532 to go along with four home runs. He also had a 3-0 record and a 1.31 earned run average as a pitcher.
Boice also excelled on the mound for the Trojans, going 4-2 againt the best of the OHSL Liberty Division and posting a 1.86 ERA. He whiffed 48 batters in his 41 innings of mound work.
Also in Class B, Dryden had sophomore catcher Brian Colbert on the fourth team and two seventh-teamers in sophomores Derek Wilson (shortstop) and Bruno Bugliosi (third baseman-pitcher).
Colbert batted .459 and hit six home runs for the Purple Lions, while Wilson hit .381 with a home run. Bugliosi struck out 70 batters while pitching 47 innings, posting a 2.98 ERA to go along with a .370 batting average.
Below is a class-by-class breakdown, with Player and Coach of the Year for each as well as other Section 3 and Section 4 performers.
State champion Cornwall from Section 9 has both the Player of the Year (automatic first-team staus in all classes) in senior pitcher-outfielder Jimmy Patterson and Coach of the Year in Guy Maisonet.
The first team includes senior catcher-pitcher Greg Jasek from Chittenango and Bishop Ludden senior second baseman Ciro Frontale. Chittenango senior infield-pitcher Wesley Burghardt and Johnson City senior pitcher-first baseman Ryan Clark are on the second team, while the third team includes Whitesboro senior center fielder-pitcher Mike Bunal, Bishop Ludden pitcher-shortstop Ryan O’Kane and Maine-Endwell shortstop Ken Hostrander, all seniors.
Fourth-team selections are Phoenix junior catcher Nate Dietz, New Hartford senior first baseman Kris Martinelli and Owego senior shortstop Steve Yanchus. Joining Hughes on the fifth team is Maine-Endwell senior pitcher Alec Romanowski, while Jamesville-DeWitt senior pitcher-second baseman Matt Yonta is on the sixth team and J-D senior third baseman Chris Lenish is on the seventh team. Syracuse CBA senior catcher Bryce Wiley is on the eighth team, along with Prior.
Senior pitcher-third baseman Ben Moxley from state champion Oneonta of Section 4 is Player of the Year, and Coach of the Year honors went Oneonta’s Joe Hughes. The first team includes Westhill senior pitcher Alex Godzak, Oneonta senior first baseman-pitcher Sean Getman and Chenango Valley senior pitcher-first baseman Austin Lewis.
Marcellus senior catcher Nick Sinay is joined on the second team by a trio from Oneonta in junior outfielder Chris Pinder, senior outfielder David Wright and senior catcher Zach Pidgeon. In addition to Homer, local third-teamers are Vernon-Verona-Sherrill senior catcher Collin Laguzza and Oneonta senior-second baseman-pitcher Conor Youngs. Colbert is joined on the fourth team by Westhill junior shortstop Juan Carlos Pena and Waverly junior pitcher-first baseman Pat Bronson.
The fifth team includes V-V-S senior pitcher Jesse Whitmeyer, Clinton senior pitcher-first baseman Rob Hardy and Whitney Point senior pitcher-first baseman Jeremy Olenski. Utica Notre Dame senior pitcher Alex Lynch is a sixth-team along with Boice. The seventh team includes, in addition to Wilson and Bugliosi, V-V-S senior pitcher Josh Webb, Ilion senior pitcher Tyler Brien, General Brown senior infielder-pitcher Jordan Delaney and Oneonta senior pitcher-outfielder Mark Giallanzo.
Senior pitcher Matt Portland from Section 5’s Victor is Player of the Year and Mike Groppuso from Section 9’s Kingston, the state champion, is Coach of the Year. Baldwinsville seniors Brett Charbonneau (shortstop) and Connor Martin (third baseman) are among the first-teamers. The second team includes Fayetteville-Manlius senior pitcher Zach Tucker and Horseheads junior pitcher-shortstop Dylan Manwaring, while Watertown senior pitcher Caleb Bettis, Baldwinsville sophomore pitcher Scott Blewett and Horseheads senior outfielder Mike Abunzo are on the third team.
Baldwinsville junior center Gabe Levanti, Fayetteville-Manlius left fielder Mike Perry and Ithaca senior shortstop Anthony Massici are on the fourth team, while Syracuse West (Corcoran) junior pitcher Ryan O’Neill and Fayetteville-Manlius senior first-baseman David Nuzzo are included on the fifth team.
Among the sixth-teamers are Watertown junior catcher Josh Belch and Syracuse East (Henninger) junior second baseman-third baseman Avery Brooks. Watertown senior infielder Kyle Simmons is on the seventh team, and Liverpool senior outfielder Alex Caruso is an eighth-teamer.
Section 4 Lansing, the state champion, swept the top honors, senior pitcher-shortstop Sean Streb the Player of the Year and Stu Dean the Coach of the Year. First-teamers include Sauquoit Valley senior pitcher-first baseman Aaron LoPiccolo and, from Lansing, senior pitcher-first baseman Benji parks and junior second baseman Ellington Hopkins.
Sauquoit Valley senior third baseman Mark Martin and Elmira Heights Edison senior shortstop Tyler Underwood are on the second team, and the third team includes Herkimer senior pitcher-outfielder Bryan McGuire and Unatego junior infielder-pitcher Quinn Barnhart. Little Falls senior pitcher-shortstop Josh Martin, Unatego senior pitcher Dan Shelton and Moravia junior pitcher Dylan Powers are among the fourth-tamers, and the fifth team includes Fabius-Pompey seniors A.J. Malone (catcher) and Casey Blanck (second baseman) and Pulaski sophomore pitcher Tom Taplin.
The Player of the Year, Mike Smithmyer, and Coach of the Year, Bob Brinkman, are both from Class 9’s John A Coleman Catholic, the state champion. Oriskany junior pitcher-shortstop Austin Smith and Hancock junior shortstop-pitcher Tyler Philips are first-teamers, while the second team includes Stockbridge Valley senior pitcher Rob Reeder, Brookfield senior pitcher-third baseman Jordon Price and Richfield Springs senior second baseman-pitcher Zach Boss.
Brookfield junior third baseman-pitcher Cody Beeching, Hancock sophomore pitcher Ryan Smith and Cherry Valley-Springfield senior pitcher-first baseman Brett Adams are on the third team. Among the fourth-teamers are Poland senior catcher Troy Weakley, the Hamilton duo of junior infielder Ben Yacavone and senior utility player Sam Hale and Cherry Valley-Springfield senior pitcher-infielder Andrew Bose.
