Luety slugging delivers state title
Homer Central slugger Gabby Luety is still swinging a hot bat this summer.
Luety batted an eye-opening .577 as her BAGSAI Thunder 16-and-Under travel softball team captured the ASA Class A 16U New York State Championship this past weekend.
In a dramatic 10-9 win over the Syracuse Renegades Gold in the title game, Luety was 3-for-4 with a double and drove in three runs.
Trailing by a run heading into the bottom of the seventh, Luety led off with a single and later scored on a one-out Cassie Frye base hit to tie the game. The Thunder pulled out the win when Melissa Martin stroked a two-out single up the middle with the bases loaded.
Pitcher Chelsea Dimon, from Athens, Pa., was the winning pitcher. She was 2-0 on the day, after throwing a one-hitter with nine strikeouts earlier. She was an out away from a perfect game, but an error and ensuing RBI double spoiled that bid.
Frye and Becca Griswold were both 3-for-4 in the title game, the winners with 17 hits overall.
Earlier this summer, Luety hit two home runs during a Team Jersey showcase tournament. In three other tournaments this summer, the Thunder tied for first place in the STPS Ponies 16U National Qualifier with the BAGSAI Heat, won the Cicero Down & Dirty 16U Tournament and won the Ithaca Diamonds Ponies National Qualifier.
Courtney Rainbow from Homer is also a member of the Thunder, competing during the tournament win in Ithaca when Luety was off at the Team Jersey showcase.
With the Trojans this spring, Luety and Rainbow were part of a state-ranked team that reached the Section 3 Class A tournament finals before losing to New Hartford.
Luety was a sophomore catcher for that 21-3 squad and recently earned second team all-state honors. She hit .541 with seven home runs and drove in 43 runs for the OHSL Freedom Division regular season champions.
