Chiro 5K all set to debut July 17

The inaugural Cortland Chiro 5K road race is ready to roll on Sunday, July 17, in a collaborative effort with the Cortland County Family YMCA, Fidelis Care and Janke Family Chiropractic.
The race replaces the Downtown 5K and will start at the SUNY Cortland Park Center Ice Arena at 8 a.m. in conjunction with the 2011 SUNY Cortland Alumni Reunion. SUNY Cortland Alumni registering can also compete in their own Alumni Division.
The Cortland Chiro 5K is named as such due to the sponsorship from Janke Family Chiropractic, a business going beyond typical chiropractic care, emphasizing improving health in an effort to reduce the risk of pain and illness.
Dr. Otto Janke said he was “shocked” by the latest health rating score of Cortland County residents and that something “has to be done.”
Janke said that it was a natural response to think of the YMCA in Cortland and hosting a 5K race would represent a great start for any individual looking to “smash through” the mental barrier of running (or walking) in a 5K event.
“I want to have people show themselves they are capable of achieving better health in their life. It’s your life, live in health,” said Janke.
Janke said he did not want to reinvent the wheel, and pursued collaboration with the YMCA. “The Y already had set up a great opportunity to have people push themselves, and did not want to start up a new individual race, when they already do the races so well.” He added that it is great to be included as part of the Fidelis 6-Pack.
The Cortland Chiro 5K is the third race in the 2011 Fidelis 6-Pack racing series.
Anyone can participate in each race individually, but those who have signed up, and have or place in all six races will have a greater chance for overall 6-Pack awards at the end of the year.
Registration forms are currently online at, or you can stop by the Cortland YMCA on 22 Tompkins Street. Race day registration will begin at SUNY Cortland at 7 a.m.
Sponsors for this year’s Fidelis 6 Pack include Fidelis Care, BorgWarner, Contento’s Demolition, Cortland Regional Medical Center, Cortland Regional Sports Council, DLH Properties, Graph-Tex, Janke Family Chiropractic, Plan First Technologies, and Royal Motors and Z-95.5 Ithaca’s Hit Music Channel.
Remaining races this year include:
— Celtic Run, Aug. 28, 8 a.m.
— Pumpkin Run, Oct. 1, 9 a.m.
— Turkey Trot, Nov. 24, 9 a.m.
