Legion heading to playoffs after rout

Cortland/Homer Legion baserunner Duff Steve beats the tag of Johnson City’s Chris Trayling as he rolls into third safely Wednesday at Greg’s Field. Steve advanced to third after his single to center was booted.

The Cortland Post 489/Homer Post 465 American Legion baseball team was strong on both sides of the ball Wednesday night en route to a 12-2 five-inning mercy rule win over visiting Johnson City Post 1305.
The winners, who finished the regular season at 10-6, collected 13 hits in the Greg’s Field contest with Alex Babcock leading the way by going 3-for-3 with a double. His brother Andrew Babcock (double, triple) and Jake Woods (double) both went 2-for-3. Meanwhile, Jake Prignon threw a complete-game four-hitter with four strikeouts to earn the mound win. He was aided by a defense that turned a pair of double plays.
Cortland/Homer is the third seed for the eight-team District 6 Tournament, which will take place Sunday through Wednesday at Conlon Field in Binghamton. The team’s Sunday opponent and game time will be determined on Saturday.
— The Cortland County Babe Ruth League has a full slate of 5:45 p.m. games on this evening’s docket. Barry Elementary School’s Guido Field will host the Cortland Elks vs. CFCU contest, while Homer White visits DeRuyter and Fabius takes on Homer Blue on the Preble diamond.
— The Cortland Elks have a pair of home games slated for Thursday and Friday at Greg’s Field. Skaneateles visits this evening in a 6 p.m. first pitch, with the Elks to face Marcellus in a Friday doubleheader at the same time.
