Fabius, Sutter remain perfect
The Fabius Falcons and Marathon Sautter Construction were victorious Thursday evening in the winners’ bracket of the Cortland County Babe Ruth League playoffs.
Fabius shaded visiting Cortland Moose 5-4 while host Marathon walloped Tully 18-6. In the losers’ bracket of the double-elimination event, the Homer Yankees ousted DeRuyter 11-7 at Beaudry Park and the Homer Sox ended host Groton’s season, with no score or other details reported.
Fabius, which finished second behind Cortland Alliance Bank in the North Division this season, will face that team in an 11 a.m. start Saturday at Beaudry Park, where the winner will face South Division champ Marathon at 1:30 p.m.
Tully will meet the Homer Sox at starting at 10 a.m. Saturday at Dave Guido Field, where McGraw will go against Moose at 12:30 p.m. The winner of the McGraw-Moose matchup will stay at Guido Field and go against the Homer Yankees at 3 p.m. Saturday’s sixth and final game will be a 5:30 p.m. start at Guido Field between the Homer Sox-Tully winner and the loser of the Cortland Alliance Bank-Fabius contest.
Fabius Falcons 5, Cortland Moose 4: Mike Rotundo threw a complete-game five-hitter with nine strikeouts for Fabius. The winners trailed 4-2 before scoring three times in the bottom of the sixth, Nick Randall driving home the tying and winning runs. Rotundo and Randall had two hits each for Fabius, while Will Lessard went 2-for-3 and losing pitcher Dylan Stafford had a triple for Moose.
Marathon 18, Tully 6: Evan Holl went 3-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored for the winners, while Alex McDonald hit a three-run double and collected four RBIs in all. Dave Smith went 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored for Tully.
Homer Yankees 11, DeRuyter 7: The Yankees won the battle of winless teams as winning pitcher Thomas Austin had six strikeouts in three innings and also went 3-for-5 with four RBIs.
