Dark Horse just sneaks into first

Dark Horse regained first place by percentage points in the Cortland Fast Pitch League Monday night, beating Mister B’s 14-4 in a five-inning mercy rule softball outing at Meldrim Field.
The win improved Dark Horse to 12-4 (.750) on the season, sneaking ahead of Stone Lounge who fell to 14-5 (.737) after a 10-3 loss to The Tavern at Cortlandville Park.
The Tavern also trimmed Mister B’s 10-3 in another five-inning mercy rule contest and sits in third place at 11-9 after the two Meldrim Field victories.
Dark Horse 14, Mister B’s 4, 5 inn.: Jeff Carr and Roger Karn combined to throw a three-hitter while the Dark Horse banged out 16 hits in cruising to victory. T.J. Griffin led the onslaught, going 3-for-4 with a home run, five RBIs and two runs scored, while Karn also went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs. Bill Weddle (triple), Ken Rainbow and Mike Doane (double) all went 2-for-3, and winning pitcher Carr hit a two-run homer and scored twice.
Tony Marshall doubled and scored a run for Mister B’s, while Tom Casterline and Dick Braco had the other hits.
The Tavern 10, Stone Lounge 3: Seven players had at least two hits each as The Tavern had 18 hits in all in the game. Mike Smith went 4-for-4 with two RBIs, while winning pitcher Mike Holl helped himself by going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and Mark Kinner was 3-for-5 with a homer.
Brian Taylor and Anthony Pitts also homered while going 2-for-5 for the winners, Taylor driving in three runs. Brothers Mike and Tom Avery both went 2-for-4 both went 2-for-5.
Andy Mead, Abe Johnson and Joe Bodden all went 2-for-3 for Stone Lounge, Mead with a home run blow while collecting two RBIs. Sean Caughey was 2-for-4 and scored twice.
The Tavern 17, Mister B’s 5: Jared Drake went 4-for-4 with a homer, three RBIs and a run for the winners, while Brian Taylor (double, three RBIs) and Mark Kinner (double) both went 4-for-5. Tom Avery went 3- for-4 with an RBI and three runs, Flett was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run and Mike Avery was 2-for-5 with an RBI and three runs sccored.
Rich Stauber went 2-for-3 with two runs for Mister B’s.
In rescheduled games for Wednesday at Meldrim Field, Dark Horse will face Mister B’s at 6:30 p.m. before a showdown with Stone Lounge at 8:15 p.m.
