Three first-round series going the distance

Three teams staved off elimination Thursday night with crucial game two wins during Cortland Men’s Slowpitch Softball League playoff action. Evening their best-of three series were Klever Lawns & Landscapes in A Division, The Tavern in B Division and K & H Motorsports in C Division.
Klever Lawns posted a 9-4 win over Red Dragon, with the deciding game slated for tonight at 6 p.m. at Dexter Park.
The Tavern rolled to a 30-11 win over X-treme Performance, with the decisive third game tonight at 6 p.m. at Meldrim Field.
K & H rallied for a 15-14 win over Graph-Tex and those teams will conclude their series tonight at 7:15 at Dexter Park.
The following teams completed two-game sweeps: Grand Rental Station, 25-1 over Woodman’s Pub/Mark’s Pizzeria; Central City Bar & Grill, 19-5 over Dark Horse/Hairy Tony’s and Gator’s Tavern (no score reported) over St. Charles Hotel in the A Division; Palm Gardens, 25-2 over Ivan’s in the B Division and King Sub 20-5 over T.J. Landscaping in the C Division.
A DIVISION
Klever Lawns & Landscapes 9. Red Dragon 4: Klever Lawns trailed 1-0 after two innings, but scored three runs in the bottom of the third to spark a 9-0 run that built an eight-run lead heading into the seventh inning. Red Dragon rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh, but got no closer.
John Sarick led Klever Lawns by going 2-for-3 with a double with Kyle Rogers also hitting a double.
Jim Beattie and Dan Edwards each went 2-for-3 for Red Dragon.
Grand Rental Station 25, Woodman’s Pub/Mark’s Pizzeria 1: Grand Rental wrapped up its season quickly by scoring 12 runs in the first inning. Jeff Lang led the winning attack by going 4-for-5 with two triples. Jamie Buck (double) and Ryan Stevens also swung 4-for-5 bats while scoring four runs each. Waylon DeGraw went 3-for-4 with a double while Dan Harris was 3-for-5 with a home run.
Bronson McCall hit a double for one of the two Woodman’s Pub/ Mark’s Pizzeria hits.
Central City Bar & Grill 19, Dark Horse/Hairy Tony’s 5: Central broke a 4-4 tie with two runs in the top of the fifth inning and seven more runs in the sixth to pull away. Jeff Carr posted a 4-for-5 effort with two RBIs to lead the Central City offense. Adam Levine added a 3-for-4 effort while Jeff Hopkins, Bill Francis and Fred Ott (3 RBIs) each had two hits.
Gaylord Bucci paced Dark Horse/Hairy Tony’s by going 4-for-4 with two RBIs while Scott Potter and Logan Mauzy (triple) each added two hits.
B DIVISION
The Tavern 30, X-treme Performance 11: The Tavern scored eight runs in the top of the second inning to build a 10-1 lead and slowly pulled away over the remaining five innings. Seven runs in the sixth and five more in the seventh sealed crushed any comeback hopes by X-treme. Chuck Bush led The Tavern by going 5-for-5 with a home run. Fours hits each were provided by Jarrod Newcomb, Jason Newcomb, Mike Poole, Paul Yarnell, Al Wlaker and Jeremy Gratton.
Tim Slocum went 4-for-5 with a triple to lead X-treme Performance while Lance Finnerty had three hits, including a double and home run.
Palm Gardens 25, Ivan’s 2: Joe Lovejoy was 4-for-5 with three doubles while Brent Handy was 4-for-5 with two doubles and a triple to lead Palm Gardens. Vinny Clarke added a 4-for-5 effort as well.
C DIVISION
K & H Motorsports 15, Graph Tex 14: In a back-and-forth contest, K & H scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning to overcome a 14-13 deficit and force a third game in their playoff series with Graph Tex. Robert Sutton led the winning attack by going 4-for-4. Josh Sutton added a 3-for-4 effort with a double and triple.
Brian McDermott went 3-for-4 for Graph Tex with a double and home run while Pat Semeraro was also 3-for-4 with a double. Elliott was 3-for-3.
King Sub 20, T.J. Landscaping 5: King Sun started quickly with seven runs in the top of the first inning before scoring two or more runs in every remaining inning except the fourth. Dan Warner led King Sub with his 4-for-5 bat that included one double. Miguel Maldonado was the winning pitcher and he aided his own cause by going 3-for-4 with a triple. Andy Warholic and Bob Stewart each added three hits.
Bert Davenport and Darrell Marshall each went 2-for-3 for T.J. Landscaping.

 

 

Frost Dryden Lumber’s star

Brandon Frost went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run and a pair of doubles Thursday night to lead Dryden Lumber to a 12-0 Duke Erickson Co-ed League softball victory over Paddy’s Pub.
Davelle Office Equipment beat The Roadhouse 17-13 in another league game.
Dryden Lumber 12, Paddy’s Pub 0: In addition to Frost, Caldwell went 3-for-3 with two doubles for the winners, while mark Maybury was 3-for-4 with a home run and T.J. Frost went 2-for-2, Dave Schlenker and Rebecca Barkley both went 2-for-3 for Paddy’s.
Davelle Office Equipment 17, The Roadhouse 13: Skip Ellis had a triple and two doubles to pace Davelle, which also got a homer from Dale Parr. Tim Kirkpatrick was the winning pitcher for Davell.

 

 

 

Junior Tigers toss no hitter

DRYDEN — A trio of pitchers combined on a no-hitter as the Cortland Junior Tigers 12-Under baseball team trounced host Dryden 14-2.
Luke Henkle, Quinn Kennedy and Greg Brown teamed up for the gem, starter Henkle with four strikeouts in three innings, Kennedy fanning two batters in two innings and Brown closing out the game by hurling the final frame. Caden Giroux, Kody Cranston, Brown and Andy Price had two hits apiece for the winners, who visit Ithaca Wednesday and close out the season at the Homer Baseball Classic Aug. 2-5.
