Trio advance, Stone Lounge stays alive
Three teams advanced and one stayed alive as the first round of the Cortland Men’s Slowpitch Softball League playoffs resumed Tuesday night.
Seventy-Seven Club completed a two-game sweep of NAPA with a 12-8 triumph in C Division first round action, where Stone Lounge evened its best-of-three series with The Tavern after a 19-10 victory.
In B Division playoff play, Brix swept Woody’s/Mark’s Pizzeria thanks to an 8-6 triumph and Gator’s Tavern’s completed a two-game sweep over Outdoor Solutions with a 14-3 win.
In the A Division, Bow-Jen/Post 489 opened its series with Red Dragon by posting a 10-5 victory.
Seventy-Seven Club 12, NAPA 8: Seventy-Seven Club broke a 3-3 tie with six runs in the top of the third inning. The six-run burst was started with a Nick Mish solo home run. Mish went 5-for-5 in the game with two home runs and a double.
Dustan DiIorio added a 3-for-4 attack with a triple. Andrew Foster (double) and Josh Hempstead (HR) each swung 2-for-4 bats for the winners.
Mike Cullip hit two triples during his 2-for-4 effort for NAPA. Also going 2-for-4 for the losers were Brian Dyer, Steve Phillips (triple) and Billy Phillips.
Stone Lounge 19, The Tavern 10: Stone Lounge scored early, and often, to pull even with The Tavern in their playoff series. The Lounge plated four runs in the bottom of the first inning and enjoyed a 12-2 cushion through three innings.
Billy Grant led the 38-hit attack as he went 4-for-4 with a double, two triples and a home run. Lee Boreland (double) and Jeff Moore each swung 3-for-3 bats while Matt Bush (double, triple, HR), Joe Marks (2 doubles), Fred St. John each went 3-for-4.
Losing pitcher Kenn Pease went 3-for-3 with a double for the Tavern. Paul Yarnell (double) and Steve Smith were 2-for-3 each and Pete Natale was 2-for-4.
Brix 8, Woody’s/Mark’s Pizzeria 6: Brix rallied for a 6-2 deficit with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and four more runs in the fifth to complete the sweep.
Leon Burk and Dan Maricle each went 3-for-3 with one double for the winners. Burk scored two runs and Maricle drove in two runs. Tonee Labar hit a home run and was the winning pitcher.
Justin Hogan delivered a 2-for-3 performance with a home run for Brix. Whitt was 2-for-2.
Gator’s Tavern 14, Outdoor Solutions 3: Gator’s broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the fourth inning and rolled into the semifinal round.
Tim Wright (2 doubles) and Dave Hubbard each went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to pace the winning offense. Ian Spafford and Calvin Taylor each chipped in with 2-for-3 efforts. Spafford drove in three runs.
Peter Delacuadra led Outdoor Solutions by going 2-for-2 with a double. Josh Brown and Matt Compton added 2-for-3 bats.
Bow-Jen/Post 489 10, Red Dragon 5: Bow-Jen trailed 3-2 before scoring three times in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the lead for good. The home team added a solo run in the fifth and sealed the victory with a four-run sixth inning to take the first game in the best-of-three series.
Matt DeGraw led the winning attack by going 3-for-3. Tony Ortiz added a 3-for-4 night with Nick Hoffmann and David Forehand (double) each going 2-for-3.
Jose Felicano paced the Red Dragon as he went 4-for-4. Chris Beattie (double) and Steve Wright chipped in with 3-for-4 efforts.
There has been no word on the A Division series matching Central City with Beer Goggles.
