Red Jug, Ink’d savor some playoff drama

The Cortland Men’s Slowpitch League softball playoffs in the B Division moved into the semifinal round Thursday night, and those games were both one-run contests decided in the last at-bat.
Red Jug Pub erupted for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a 10-9 victory over Brix in the first encounter of their best-of-three semifinal series. Meanwhile, Ink’d plated a decisive run in the bottom of the seventh to emerge with the same slight 10-9 margin of victory over Gator’s Tavern and gain the upper hand in that series.
In A Division first round playoff action, Beer Goggles scored five times in the bottom of the seventh inning for an 11-10 win over Central City and Bow-Jen/Post 489 completed a sweep of Red Dragon with a 15-9 triumph. In a playoff game for the regular season crown and top seed in the semifinals, Grand Rental Station/Gable Inn scored three times in the bottom of the seventh inning for a wild 19-18 win over GSG Vincent/St. Charles Hotel. Both teams came into that game with matching 17-3 records.
In the C Division playoffs, The Tavern advances to the semifinal round with an 8-6 triumph over Stone Lounge to win its series two games to one. Study Hall scored the winning run in the bottom of an extra eighth inning to notch a 3-2 victory over Seventy-Seven Club in the first game of their semifinal best-of-three series.
Red Jug Pub 10, Brix 9: Trailing 9-6 entering the seventh inning, Barry Shaver capped the four-run rally with a single up the middle to drive home the winning run. Mike Reeners (double), Trever Norman, Mike Browngardt and Mike Myers each went 3-for-4 for Red Jug Pub.
Swinging 3-for-4 bats for Brix were Jim Sullivan, Leon Burk, Tim Metcalf and Justin Baker.
Ink’d 10, Gator’s Tavern 9: Ink’d could not halt Gator’s comeback bid in the top of the seventh inning as the visitors scored three runs to tie the game at 9-9. Randy Phillips (2-for-4) prevented extra innings with the game-winning single in the bottom of the seventh.
Tony Keegan led the winners with a 3-for-3 effort and a double. Josh Sutton was 3-for-3 with a double and home run. Ryan Briggs added a 2-for-4 effort.
Dave Hubbard (HR) and Tim Dovi (triple) each went 3-for-4 to lead the Gator’s attack. Billy Epp chipped in with his 2-for-3 bat and Ian Spafford was 2-for-4 with a home run.
Beer Goggles 11, Central City 10: On the verge of elimination after a 14-6 loss Tuesday, Beer Goggles strung together eight straight hits to plate five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to even the best-of-three series at 1-1.
Ryan Pennello was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a triple and two RBIs to pace the winning attack. Lucas Mauzy was also 3-for-3 while Garrett Stage went 3-for-4 with a double. Matt Rutkowski added a 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.
Corey Langtry went 3-for-3 for Central City. Josh Bogden provided a 3-for-4 effort with a double and home run.
Bow-Jen/Post 489 15, Red Dragon 9: Bow-Jen broke a 7-7 tie with eight runs in the top of the seventh inning to complete the sweep and move into the semifinals.
Tony Volpicelli paced the offensive attack as he went 4-for-5 with a triple and home run. Waylon DeGraw added his own 4-for-5 effort for Bow-Jen while Nick Hoffmann, Codi Clayton and Dave Evans each went 3-for-4.
Red Dragon saw Steve Wright, Jose Feliciano and Chris Beattie swing 4-for-5 bats.
Grand Rental/Gable Inn 19, GSG/St. Charles 18: After tying for the top spot at the end of the regular season, GSG Vincent broke a 16-16 tie with two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Grand rental responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to win the game and number-one seed in the semifinal round.
Jason Hogan paced the winning offense by going 4-for-4. Casey Crandall went 4-for-5 with two doubles with Justin DeGraw going 3-for-4. Jason Bennison was 5-for-5 for GSG Vincent. Brian Keefer, Billy Kerry, Nick Baker and Bryan Bangs were each 4-for-5.
The Tavern 8, Stone Lounge 6: The Tavern kept the playoff drive alive with three tuns in the bottom of the fifth inning to break a 4-4 tie. The Tavern will face King Sub in the semifinals.
Kenn Pease went 3-for-3 to lead the Tavern attack. Pete Natale (double) and Ralph Holl added 2-for-3 efforts.
Matt Bush and Mitch Bush each provided 2-for-3 performances for Stone Lounge.
Study Hall 3, Seventy-Seven Club 2: Study Hall tied the game with a solo run in the bottom of the seventh inning before Steve Young (2-for-3, triple) drove home the winning run in the eighth as Study Hall took game one of this semifinal match-up. San Kile (2-for-3, double) scored the winning run.
