Cellar dweller Ivan’s gets to rejoice
Last place Ivan’s, the C Division cellar dweller, got a chance to savor its second victory of this Cortland Women’s Slowpitch League softball season on Wednesday night.
Ivan’s came away with a 7-6 narrow victory over Franklin Rock/Central City Bar & Grill for that elusive triumph.
Meanwhile, the top two teams in the division continued their winning ways — first place Paddy’s Pub/281 Bowl handing Xpress-Pay.com/Cutia’s Pizza 18-9 while second place Gator’s Tavern out-scored Hairy Tony’s 15-11.
Another last place team looming large was Homer Logging, which upset Bob’s Riverside 6-2 in a D Division outing. Once again, the top two teams in that division were victorious, with first place Red Jug Pub blanking Deli Downtown 12-0 and second place Stone Lounge doubling up Palm Gardens 10-5.
In E Division play, Dave’s Automotive was the last place team coming up with a 18-13 victory over Easy Street/Stupid Choppers. In a showdown for first place, St. Charles Hotel/Tioga Hardwoods trimmed Ho-Beau’s/Doug’s Fish Fry 5-2 and The Tavern topped Dark Horse 7-3.
Ivan’s 7, Franklin Rock/Central City 6: Corinne Russell was 4-for-4 with a double to lead Ivan’s, who never trailed after scoring four times in the top of the fifth inning. Jolene Ferringer added three hits for the victors, while Jamie Hage and Emily Weber swung 3-for-3 Franklin Rock/Central City bats.
Paddy’s/281 Bowl 18, Xpress-Pay/Cutia’s 9: Seven runs in the top of the seventh put the division leaders in control. Kristina Abbott was 4-for-5 to lead a 22-hit Paddy’s Pub/281 Bowl offense, while winning pitcher Melea Bartley closed the show with a game-ending strikeout. Lindsey Richards was 3-for Xpress-Pay.com/Cutia’s.
Gator’s 15, Hairy Tony’s 11: An 11-run outburst in the bottom of the fifth inning provided the winning Gator’s margin, as Mary Griffin (3x3), Sueann Stahlman (3x4), Becky VanWagenen (3x4) and Deb Slaven (2x3) led the hit parade. Lisa Dovi was 3-for-5 with a two-bagger for Hairy Tony’s.
Homer Logging 6, Bob’s Riverside 2: Some sure-handed defense helped hurler Stacey Griswold hold the Bob’s Riverside bats down, while Jenni DeWitt led the winners with a double.
Red Jug Pub 12, Deli Downtown 0: While winning pitcher Rachel Scutt was keeping Deli Downtown from scoring, Molly Reagan and Emily Quinlan were each driving in three runs for the division leaders.
Stone Lounge 10, Palm Gardens 5: Stone Lounge never trailed, triples by Stacey Caldwell and Sheila Bowman the big blows.
Dave’s Automotive 18, Easy Street/Stupid Choppers 13: Zenta Smith’s 5-for-6 plate performance highlighted Dave’s Automotive’s victory, this victory coming despite playing with only two outfielders.
St. Charles/Tioga 5, Ho-Beau’s/Doug’s 2: Michelle Kinney was the winning pitcher in this defensive duel, while losing pitcher Katie Swanson homered in defeat.
Tavern 7, Dark Horse 3: Doubles by Cathy Curry and Christy Mott were part of The Tavern’s hitting success.
