Fastpitch playoffs: Hairy Tony’s/CPI repeat as champs
Hairy Tony’s/CPI rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Dark Horse 3-2 Monday night and claim its second straight Cortland Men’s Fastpitch League softball championship.
Dark Horse scored once each in the first and third innings of the deciding game of the best-of-three title series on Meldrim Field. The first-inning run scored on an error while Jeff Carr’s RBI single made it 2-0 in the third.
Hairy Tony’s/CPI, which also won the regular-season crown for the second year in a row and finished the season at 15-6 overall, scored twice in the bottom of the third on RBI singles by Tom Darling and Tom Avery to tie the game. Greg Casbeer led off the bottom of the sixth with a single, with Ed Leonardo coming on as a pinch-runner and going to second on a passed ball before Marcus Blanchard’s single brought him home with the deciding run.
Winning pitcher Shawn Samson threw a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts and had a double, the game’s only extra-base hit. Samson had a total of 42 strikeouts in the three-game championship series and fanned 64 batters in his team’s five post-season contests.
No one had more than one hit in Monday’s game. Leonardo and Mike Myers each singled and scored a run, and Darling also scored once for Hairy Tony’s/CPI. Carr allowed seven hits and had three strikeouts in taking the mound loss while Yale Brian Hughes had the other hit and scored a run. Tony Whitt also scored once for Dark Horse, which finished third during the regular season and went 9-11 overall.
SLOWPITCH PLAYOFFS: Meldrim Field and Dexter Park will be hosting playoff contests this evening in the Cortland Men’’s Slowpitch League resumes post-season play.
The Cortland Women’s Slowpitch League will wind up the regular season with a full slate of games on Wednesday before heading into the playoffs in the A and B Divisions.
Final Standings: Hairy Tony’s/CPI 11-4 (15-6 overall), Brix 9-6 (9-8), Dark Horse 6-9 (9-11), Mister B’s 4-11 (5-13)
