Dark Horse rolls to berth in finals

Dark Horse wrapped up a spot in the Cortland Men’s Fast Pitch League softball finals Monday, beating Amelia’s Ristorante 12-8 to complete a sweep of their best-of-three semifinal series.
Beer Goggles downed Central City Bar & Grill 10-5 in the opening game of the other semifinal series played at Meldrim Field in Cortland.
Dark Horse 12, Amelia’s Ristorante 8: The winners, who finished third in the regular season, broke a 7-7 tie with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good and wrapped things up with three runs in the fifth.
Waylon DeGraw led Dark Horse offensively, going 3-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored, while Dennis Hopkins went 3-for-4 with as double, an RBI and two runs and Kevin Putnam 2-for-5 with a run. Winning pitcher Jeff Carr chalked up five strikeouts and helped himself with a triple and a run scored.
After falling behind 4-0 at the end of two innings, third-place Amelia’s scored five runs in the third to briefly take the lead before Dark Horse scored three times in the bottom of the frame for a 7-5 lead. Amelia’s then scored twice in the top of the fourth to tie the game again. Brandon Galutz (double, three RBIs, run), Joe Bodden (RBI, run) and Tony Caravella (RBI, run) all went 2-for-4 in the losing effort.
Beer Goggles 10, Central City  5: The regular-season champs erased an early 1-0 deficit with four runs in the second, keyed by Andrew Foster’s two-run homer, and never looked back. Winning pitcher Tom Avery went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run, while Mark Kinner went 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs and Brian Taylor tripled, drove in a run and scored twice. Reliever Mike Holl worked the final three innings and earned a save.
Seth McMahon went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for fourth-place Central City, while Josh Zach, who took the mound loss, went 2-for-4 with a triple, an RBI and two runs.
The second game of the series will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Meldrim Field, with the third game, if necessary, immediately following. The championship series is tentatively set to start Monday at Meldrim.
