Tavern sweeps into 2nd round

The Tavern is the first team to advance in the Cortland Men’s Slow Pitch League softball playoffs.
In the opening round of the National Division, The Tavern downed CCRP twice in their best-of-three playoff series Tuesday by scores of 7-6 and 12-2.
In other opening round games in the National Division, NAPA edged Friends 10-8 and Hess rolled past Meldrim Paint 11-1 in game one of their respective series.
In American Division best-of-three contests, Red Dragon blanked Hooley’s 5-0 and Central City Bar & Grill mercy-ruled Stone Lounge/Willcox Tire 19-4 in game one of their respective series.
Tavern 7, CCRP 6: Jerry Gray went 3-for-3 and Paul Yarnell hit a double as The Tavern built a 7-4 lead before CCRP scored twice in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull within one run. Neither team scored in the sixth or seventh innings.
The Tavern 12, CCRP 2: Matt Bush was 4-for-4 with two doubles as The Tavern scored all 12 runs in the first four innings while holding CCRP scoreless. Steve Smith and Paul Yarnell each belted two doubles for the winners. Lee Boreland smacked a double in CCRP’s final game of the season.
NAPA 10, Friends 8: Greg Zacek hit the walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning as NAPA scored twice to break an 8-8 tie. Lance Price and Mike Lederman swung 3-for-3 bats for the winners with Steve Phillips going 3-for-4.
Jeremy Baker was 4-for-4 with a double to pace Friends. Adam Carroll chipped in with his 3-for-4 bat.
Hess 11, Meldrim Paint 1: After building a 2-0 lead through two innings, Hess broke the game open by plating seven runs in the bottom of the third. Steve Furlong (double) and Matt DeGraw each went 3-for-3 for Hess. Cody Clayton helped out by going 3-for-4 with a triple and home run for the winning team with Tony Keegan going 3-for-4 with a double.
Bryan Morton led Meldrim Paint as he went 3-for-3.
Red Dragon 5, Hooley’s 0: It was a defensive contest as the two teams combined for a total of 12 hits.
Brett Wright hit a home run and drove in three of the Dragon’s five runs. Jeremy Milligan added a triple. Matt Rutkowski hit a double for Hooley’s.
Central City 19, Stone Lounge/Willcox 4: Cory Langtry ended this game by the mercy rule after belting his grand-slam home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Dennis Hopkins swung a 3-for-3 bat with a double and triple for the winners. Bill Francis, Jim Hogan, Jeff Hopkins and Sparky Case each added two hits.
Tim Robison was 2-for-3 for Stone Lounge/Willcox Tire. Bob Craig hit a double for Stone Lounge.

In the American Division, Red Dragon takes on Hooley’s at Dexter Park at 6 p.m., Red Jug Pub faces top seed Grand Rental Station at Meldrim Field at 8:30 p.m. and in a pair of 6:30 contest Central City meets Stone Lounge at Beaudry I and Beer Goggles faces Dark Horse/Hairy Tony’s at Beaudry II.
In the National Division at Dexter Park, Outdoor Solutions plays King Sub at 7:15 p.m. and Tavern meets Ivan’s at 8:30 p.m. Meldrim Field will host NAPA vs. Friends at 6 p.m. and Meldrim Paint vs. Hess at 7:15 p.m.
