High school sports: Cortland squads set to go
All of Cortland High’s fall varsity and junior varsity teams open practice this coming Monday (Aug. 15).
The golfers, under Yale Hughes, will tee it up at 9:45 a.m. and go until 1 p.m. at Willowbrook Golf Club. Coach Ilona Ryon’s girls’ varsity soccer team and Andrea Tutino’s JV girls’ squad will start practices from 8 to 10 a.m. at Moiseichik Field and Barry School, respectively. The varsity cross country teams, under Matt Dearie, will have their initial sessions from 8 to 10 a.m. at the high school.
New coach Lisa Caselle’s varsity and new JV coach Nicole Latham’s field hockey squads will be practicing from 8 to 11 a.m. on the grass field at Cortland High. The boys’ varsity soccer team, under Brian Rozewski, will practice from 10 a.m. to noon at the high school, while John Protheroe’s JV boys’ soccer squad will be at Barry School for the same time period.
The girls’ varsity tennis team, under Lara Discenza, and new coach Cheri Olson’s JV girls’ tennis squad will both practice from 10 to noon on the high school courts.
The varsity football team, under head coach Pete Reif, and Dustin Bush’s JV gridders will both have sessions from 2 to 7 p.m. at Moiseichik and the school’s back field, respectively.
The stadium at the high school will be the site of the first practice for Nikki Zeches’ cheerleading squad, going from 4 to 6 p.m.
The modified football team, under new head coach Patrick McNerney, will have its first practice from 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 29 at the high school. On Sept. 7, the modified boys’ soccer team, with Nolan Sinclair now in charge, will practice from 2:45 to 4:45 p.m at Paduan while the modified girls’ soccer team, under coach Abbey Albright, will practice from 2:45 to 4:15 p.m. at the high school.
Also on Sept. 7, Kindra Catalano’s modified field hockey team and new coach Carol Brafman’s boys’ and girls’ modified cross country teams will practice for the first time starting at 2:45 p.m. Sept. 7 at the high school, finishing at 4:30 p.m. and 4:15 p.m., respectively.
All athletes must have stamped white physical cards prior to participating in any practice sessions.
