Clifford heroics cap off upset

Brian Clifford drove in the winning run Thursday night as Outdoor Solutions/Hess completed an upset-minded two-game sweep of NAPA with a 5-4 victory in Cortland Men’s Slowpitch Softball League B Division playoff action.
In other B playoff games, Holley’s Green completed a two-game sweep of Tavern B with a 14-2 win while forcing a decisive third game were Crown Liquors with an 8-7 win over Hooley’s White and Gator’s Tavern with an 8-2 victory over Friends B.
In C Division playoffs, Friends C evened its best-of-three series at 1-1 with a 20-4 victory over K&H Motorsports, while in a late report CCRP eliminated Marietta 18-8.
In A Division, Central City Bar & Grill topped Red Jug Pub 19-5 and Dark Horse/Hairy Tony’s pounded St. Charles Hotel A 20-4 in the first game of their best-of-three series.
Outdoor Solutions/Hess 5, NAPA 4: NAPA took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Outdoor Solutions/Hess scored once in the second in twice in the third to even the score at 3-3. After each team scored once in the fourth inning, but game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh.
Eugene Forehand led off with a single and Matt DeGraw (2-for-3) singled, With one out, Matt Robinson (2-for-2) walked to load the bases. Clifford delivered a single up the middle to score Forehand as the winning run.
Chris Maxfield was also 2-for-3 for the winners.
Dave Hubbard (double), Steve Phillips and Bill Phillips each went 2-for-3 with NAPA.
Hooley’s Green 14, Tavern B 2: Hooley’s put this game away with a total of 10 runs scored during the third and fourth innings while keeping Tavern B off the scoreboard until the top of the seventh. Johnny Crampton led the Green Team by going 4-for-4 with a double. Eric Miller and Matt Rutkowski each went 3-for-4 with two doubles for the winners. John Dean had a triple with three RBIs.
Mark Helms and Chuck Bush swung 2-for-3 bats for Tavern B.
Crown Liquor 8, Hooley’s White 7: Crown Liquor avoided the sweep with a stunning three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to upset B Division regular season champion Hooley’s White. After three ties, Crown Liquor went ahead 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth before Hooley’s grabbed a 7-5 adavantage with four runs in the top of the seventh and was looking for the sweep. Crown Liquor regrouped and scored three times in the bottom of the inning to post the series-tying win.
Cubby Burk (2-for-3) drove in the winning run for Crown Liquor with J.R. Marks (4-for-4) scoring the winning run. Mike Russell was 3-for-4 for Crown Liquor.
Joe Bobake led Hooley’s White by going 3-for-4 and scoring two runs.
Gator’s Tavern 8, Friends 2: Derek Fiene was 3-for-3 with a double as Gator’s took control with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and helped snap a seven-game Friends winning streak. John Warwick chipped in with a 2-for-2 effort while Shawn Jenney was 2-for-3.
Jeremy Devereese was 2-for-2 with a home run for Friends with Dave Seamans also going 2-for-2.
Friends C 20, K&H Motorsports 4: Friends scored nine runs in the top of the first inning and six runs in the third to grab a 15-2 lead. Jeremy Baker led the offense with a 5-for-5 bat that included two doubles and one home run. Scott Knight was 4-for-4 with a double and triple while Nate Cobb went 4-for-4 with a triple and home run for the winners.
Daryl Marshall was 3-for-3 for K&H while Kyle Rogers went 2-for-3 with a home run.
Central City Bar & Grill 20, Red Jug Pub 4: central City scored often after falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning. After four runs in the second and four more runs in the third, Central City led 9-2 and never looked back.
Dennis Hopkins hit for the cycle by going 4-for-5 with a double, triple, home run and three RBIs. Bill Francis and Jeff Carr (two doubles) each added 4-for-5 bats while T.J. Griffin (2B, HR), Tony Volpicelli (2b, 3B) and Jeff Hopkins each went 3-for-4. Griffin and Volpicelli had three RBIs each and Hopkins two ribbies.
Chris Terwilliger was 3-for-3 for Red Jug Pub with a double. Steve Everle added a 2-for-3 effort.
Dark Horse/Hairy Tony’s 20, St. Charles Hotel 4: G. Coyne and B. Donahue each belted two triples to pace the Dark Horse attack. Jason Reynolds added his 3-for-4 bat.
