Crowns fit for Paddy’s, Deli and Dark Horse
Paddy’s Pub, Deli Downtown and Dark Horse were crowned Cortland Women’s Slowpitch Softball League playoff champions after a long weekend of play.
Paddy’s Pub was crowned C Division champion after downing Gator’s/Cortland Self Storage in the final after the Gator’s Gang made a remarkable run through the loser’s bracket.
After losing to Paddy’s Pub Friday, Gator’s defeated Red Jug Pub 12-5,Franklin Rock/Central City 7-4 and Hairy Tony’s 5-0 Saturday to meet the Pubsters again for all the marbles. Paddy’s prevailed again for the crown.
Deli Downtown came out of the D Division loser’s bracket to defeated Night Owls for the title. Night Owls beat Deli Downtown Saturday 4-2, but Deli rebounded with wins over Palm Gardens — an 11-10, 8-inning winner over One Cent in a loser’s bracket game. That set up a rematch with Night Owls and Deli won a pair of games from the Owls for the title.
In the E Division playoffs, Dark Horse and The Tavern met a total of three times. The Tavern took the first meeting 4-2 to send Dark Horse to the loser’s bracket. Dark Horse stayed alive with an 8-4 win to eliminate Easy Street/Stupid Choppers before sweeping The Tavern 10-2 and 6-4 to claim the championship.
In playoff games that were reported:
Hairy Tony’s 7, Franklin Rock/Central City 6, 8 innings: Linda Rabusin was 3-for-3 with a double to lead Hairy Tony’s, who had an early 6-3 lead vanish. Lisa Parsons added a 3-for-4 effort with a double.
Katrina Fox went 4-for-4 with a triple and Stephanie Hartquist was 3-for-4 with a double for Franklin Rock/Central City.
Gator’s/Self Storage 12, Red Jug Pub 5: Gator’s grabbed a 6-0 lead over the first two innings and never felt threatened. Maggie Brown led the winning attack going 3-for-4. Shannon Allen was 3-for-5 for Red Jug Pub.
Gator’s/Self Storage 7, Franklin Rock/Central City 4: Gator’s plated two insurance runs in the top of the fifth inning to stay alive Saturday afternoon.
Mary Griffin and Denise Dubrava each went 3-for-4 for Gator’s/Cortland Self Storage. Fox was 3-for-4 with a double for Franklin Rock.
Gator’s/Self Storage 5, Hairy Tony’s 0: Julie Conklin tossed a three-hit shutout to send Gator’s into the finals. Brown (triple) and Laura Johnson each swung 2-for-3 bats for Gator’s. Rabusin, Sueann Stahlman and Becky Merritt got the Hairy Tony’s hits.
Night Owls 4, Deli Downtown 2: Mary Kate Boland went 3-for-3 with two runs scored as Night Owls send Deli Downtown to the loser’s bracket with its only win over the eventual champion.
Michele Workman (two RBIs) and Sarah Hill each added 2-for-3 efforts with one double while Nicole Meeker was also 2-for-3. Meg Cross went 3-for-4 with a double for Deli Downtown. Jackie Sutton, Maria Manning and Erin Regan added two hits each.
Palm Gardens/Fine Designs 11, One Cent 10, 8 innings: The winners survived after One Cent tied the game at 8-8 with four runs in the bottom of the seventh in the elimination contest.
Kelly Prentice went 3-for-4 to lead Palm Gardens/Fine Designs. Shanna Brown, Darci Gumaer and Carrie Gumaer each added 2-for-5 performances. Rachel Moran was 3-for-4 for One Cent with two doubles.
The Tavern 4, Dark Horse 2: The Tavern broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the top of the fifth inning and sent Dark Horse into the loser’s bracket.
Deb Buchan went 4-for-5 with two doubles to pace The Tavern offense. Christy Mott and Pam Wenck added 3-for-4 efforts with one double each with Kathy Curry providing 3-for-4 support. Jackie Hinkle was 3-for-4 for Dark Horse.
Dark Horse 8, Easy Street/Choppers 4: Dark Horse staved off elimination, never trailing after a five-run opening inning. Danielle Chase was 3-for-4 to pace Dark Horse. Jackie Hinkle added a 2-for-4 bat with a triple. Emily Franz and Betsy Young each went 2-for-3 for Easy Street/Stupid Choppers.
Dark Horse 10, The Tavern 2: Dark Horse used a five-run burst in the top of the fourth inning to hand The Tavern its first playoff loss and force a final deciding game. Kelli Griswold led the winning attack going 3-for-5 with two doubles. Jamie Reynolds was 2-for-5 with one double. Mott went 3-for-4 for The Tavern, as Wenck went 2-for-3.
Dark Horse 6, The Tavern 4: With everything on the line, Dark Horse scored all six of its runs in the top of the third inning to break the scoreless tie and led from that point on.
Karen Standish and Brittni Griep swung 3-for-4 bats for Dark Horse. Mott kept pace with her own 3-for-4 Tavern effort.
