TULSA, Ok. — Groton’s Cory Stelick and Matt Porter from Cortland were well back in the field after Monday’s first round of the U.S. Amateur Championship golf tournament.
Stelick fired a first-round 82, 12- over par, and was tied for 267th in the 312-player field entering today’s second round. Porter, a freshman at Penn State, was 308th after shooting an 87. Both played the Southern Hills Country Club course, as did leader Tim Jackson of Germantown, Tenn., who carded a two-under 68.
Three of Porter’s Nittany Lion teammates are also in the field. Senior T.J. Howe fired a six-over 76 at Cedar Ridge Country Club and was tied for 114th, while senior Kevin Foley was tied for 235th at 80 (Cedar Ridge) and junior Tommy McDonagh was tied for 279th at 83 (Southern Hills).
After today’s second round, the top 64 scorers will compete in match play starting Wednesday. The event will culminate in a 36-hole final between the last two remaining players on Sunday.
