Homer, CHS both humbled

You couldn’t really picked a much tougher season-opening opponent for your tennis season. That’s what Coach Nancy Cavellier was thinking after watching her Homer Central girls host powerful Jamesville-DeWitt Tuesday.
Laura Dart picked up the only Trojans win in a 6-1 loss to the Red Rams in an OHSL Freedom Division match. Dart dumped Amanda Lee 6-7 (5-7), 6-0, 6-4 in third singles competition.
Cortland High had a similar fate, losing 6-1 to Fulton in a Freedom Division outing.
Jamesville-DeWitt 6, Homer 1: Dart’s third straight win was the lone Homer bright spot.
“We’re going to pull out any successes we can out of this match,” said Cavellier. “Laura Dart is our success tonight. She played with heart and hustle.
“This match has given us an eye opener what areas we need to work on, learn and move on,” she added. “Some other positive aspects were our doubles teams. Katie (Sinclair) and Molly (Gray) were up 5-2 in the first set and I think nerves got the best of them. Nerves also got Michelle (Spencer) and Hannah (Teter) off to a slow start, leaving them in a pinch for most of the match. Danielle (Howell) and Samantha (Peckham) have greatly improved over the summer. I’m pleased with their tenacity.”
Sinclair and Gray dropped that first set 6-7 after a 5-7 tiebreaker before losing the second set 4-6 to Elena Marchetti-Bowick and Hannah Stefl at second doubles.
Katie Cieplicki and Ashi Masrani posted a 6-1, 6-4 straight sets win over Spencer and Teter at first doubles. Lauren Swan and Nina Williams were 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victors at third doubles over Howell and Peckham.
Homer will return to Freedom Division action Thursday as the Trojans host Fulton at 4:30 p.m.
Fulton 6, Cortland 1: The third doubles tandem of juniors Brianna McAdams and Casey Rulison scored the only point for the visiting Purple Tigers. McAdams and Rulison improved to 2-0 on the season by beating Dallaslyn Lamb and Morgan Parkhurst in a 6-3, 4-6, 14-12 marathon.
The Purple Tigers are now 1-1 on the season in the OHSL Freedom Division and overall, while Fulton won its league opener and improved to 2-0 overall.
Two of the six matches the Red Raiders won went to three sets. Faith Montgomery beat Svetlana Yarmolyuk 7-6 (7-1) 6-4 at third singles, while at fourth doubles Emily Arduini and Darci Sorbello were 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 winners over Emalee Burkhard and Kendahl Warren.
Cortland hosts Mexico at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
