OHSL Volleyball: Trojans take court showdown

Momentum is always key for the success of any team.
Homer Central found it early in a showdown of undefeated volleyball teams, as the Trojans posted a 25-18, 25-16, 22-25, 25-14 victory over visiting powerhouse Marcellus in OHSL action Tuesday.
Homer runs its winning streak to 5-0 while Marcellus drops to 3-1.
“We knew that this was going to be an extremely difficult test for us,” Homer coach Jeremy Cook said. “Marcellus is always a well coached, disciplined and extremely skilled team. We were able to grab some momentum and confidence early in the match which helped greatly being more comfortable on defense and in serve receive.
“We really have such a great group of girls that are extremely excited about playing volleyball,” he added. “Marcellus is always a hard attacking and super fast paced team. With good defense and confidence we were able to pass really well easing the pressure on their hard back row attacks. Good defense will be something we will have to lean on to continue to be successful.”
Co-captains Emily Cottrell and Lindsay Sears powered the Homer attack. Cottrell had 10 assists, seven kills and three aces while Sears recorded nine digs, seven kills and two blocks. Emma Gutchess dished out 23 assists with seven digs. Mikayla MacNeill added six kills, two assists and two aces, Kristen Fuller had 11 digs and three kills plus Baylee Buchanan provided four digs while Mary Mercer added five digs.
Kayla Bryant paced Marcellus with 10 assists, five kills and two aces. Brittney valentine chipped in with six digs and two aces, Jennie Delia five digs and two aces, plus Kendyll French four kills and two aces.
HOMER JVs remained undefeated, but improving to 5-0 wasn’t easy. The Trojans won the first set 25-20, but fell 16-25 to Marcellus in the second set. Homer took charge in the decisive third set and posted the 25-10 score to win the match.
Megan Guerrera led the Trojans with 15 digs, four kills and three aces. Meleah Hartnett was close behind with 11 assists, three digs, two digs and two aces. Other Trojan support came from Molly Ulrich (10 digs, 4 aces), Ashley Lee (8 digs, 3 kills, Cary Trierweiler (4 aces, 4 kills), Lindsey Sovocool (5 digs) and Caley Cornwell (4 kills)
Homer will return to OHSL action next Thursday as the Trojans travel to Solvay. JV play begins at 4:30 p.m.
