Homer Central’s Molly Burhans belts a backhand during her first singles victory over Cortland’s Allison Holl Wednesday at SUNY Cortland.
Homer Central girls closed out the regular season with a 7-0 non-league tennis victory over Cortland High, making Senior Day a happy occasion for seven Trojan players.
Jenna McMullin, Aliza Willsey, Annabell Mooney, Carmela Mooney, Rachel Crompton, Brooke White and Katie Mercer each had a balloon and poster court side as they were honored before Wednesday’s match and Homer then won every match in straight sets to close out the regular season at 7-3.
The Purple Tigers finish the regular season at 3-7.
“It’s been an extra special season having SUNY Cortland allowing us to use their amazing 10 courts all season,” Homer coach Nancy Cavellier said. “Our ladies had a solid win tonight and hope to have home court advantage for team sectionals tomorrow at our home away from home... SUNY Cortland.”
The Trojans look to return to SUNY Cortland when the Section 3 Class B team tournament begins today, weather permitting.
Homer is the eighth-seed and will host ninth-seed Westhill at 4 p.m. If the match is rained out today, it will take place Friday at SUNY Cortland. The winner will travel to top-seed Oneida Saturday for a 3 p.m. quarterfinal round match.
In sweeping past rival Cortland for the second time this season, having won an OHSL Freedom Division match on the Purple Tigers’ courts earlier, Molly Burhans stepped into first singles for Homer and posted a 7-5, 6-2 win over Allison Holl.
Rachel Crompton played another solid match at second singles with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Malena Darling. Catarina Kruman did not lose a game in her victory over Madisyn Zimmer at third singles.
Singles players Katie Mercer and Brooke White joined forces at first doubles to defeat Meaghan Kendall and Kathleen Starr 6-2, 6-1. It was the same set scores for Madison Baker and Marlena Kruman at second doubles over Sarah Boyce and Kayci Olson. Carmella Mooney and Tessa Brown posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at third doubles over Elina Thayer and Mckenna Morris while Annabell Mooney and Aliza Willsey were pushed in the second set by Dominique Pace and Mackenzie Magin in the second set at fourth doubles. Mooney-Willsey took the first set 6-0 but needed a 7-3 tie-breaker in the second set for a 7-6 win.
Cortland’s Starr Named
To Advisory Committee
Cortland High junior Kathleen Starr joins Fulton junior Jacob Geitner as the Section 3 representatives on the New York State Public High School Athletic Association’s 2016-17 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
The SAAC was developed to give student-athletes a voice within the NYSPHSAA. Over the course of the school year, the committee will discuss topics relevant to high school student-athletes and develop ways to maintain a positive athletic experience. Each committee member is expected to exemplify leadership while providing feedback of NYSPHSAA special programs including, but not limited to, Scholar-Athlete, Sportsmanship, Life of an Athlete, Student Leadership, and Community Service. Of the 61 applications, 22 members were chosen. In addition, three members from last year’s SAAC will be the SAAC Leaders.
Two student-athletes from each of the 11 sections were selected to serve a one-year term. However, juniors selected will have the option to stay on for two years. Members were chosen based on an academic resume which included GPA, extracurricular activities, and participation in sports.
The SAAC’s first teleconference will take place on Sunday at 7 p.m.
