OHSL volleyball: Trojans hold offrival Red Raiders

After being unable to finish off a sweep of volleyball visitor Fulton on Monday night, Homer Central girls did not get ruffled.
The Trojans dominated the fourth set to secure a 25-21, 25-19, 23-25, 25-14 victory to improve to 7-2 in the OHSL Freedom Division in the midst of a busy schedule stretch.
“It was a nice win over an extremely scrappy Fulton team. They were all over the court and played outstanding defense,” said coach Jeremy Cook after the Homer victory.
Lindsay Sears had 16 kills and Mikayla MacNeill 12 kills at the net to power the attack, setter Emma Gutchess providing 28 assists over the four sets.
“This was a really long week with a tournament this past Saturday,” added Cook, as the Trojans won the silver bracket at the Johnson City Tournament. “It was really nice to leave Section 3 and play some different competition.”
The tournament started a stretch when the Trojans begin this week with the Fulton match, host Bishop Grimes this afternoon with a 4:30 p.m. junior varsity clash and then travel to LaFayette on Thursday.
“To start off on the right foot Saturday and then to continue tonight was really a nice testament to the girls’ work ethic,” said Coach Cook. “If Homer has a rival in volleyball it would probably be Fulton, so this match is huge each year.”
Sears also served up three aces, had two blocks at the net and came up with 11 digs on defense to get the Trojans past the Red Raiders (4-4).
MacNeill had three aces and two digs, while Emily Cottrell came up with eight kills, a dozen digs, two aces and a block at the net.
Erica Pawlewicz had nine kills, Donna Aiken 20 assists and Keisha Pierce 14 digs to lead Fulton.
HOMER JVs were 18-25, 25-19, 25-23 winners over Fulton, as setter Meleah Hartnett collected 20 assists over the three games while Cary Trierweiler led the offense with 11 kills.
Trierweiler also had three aces and four digs defensively for the unbeaten Trojans (9-9). Mackenzie Gratton had a steady all-around performance with four aces, three kills and nine digs. Ashley Lee had three aces and three kills, while Megan Guerrera finished with three aces, three digs and two kills.
