Red Lions nail down CCL title

DeRUYTER — The Cincinnatus Central boys’ soccer team wrapped up its fourth straight Central Counties League championship Monday afternoon with a 4-0 shutout victory over host DeRuyter.
The Red Lions finished 11-0-1 in league play, a game ahead of second-place McGraw (10-1-1), and are 14-1-1 overall heading into sectional Class D play. DeRuyter wound up 5-7 in the league and 8-8 overall, and will also be competing in the Class D tournament.
Starter Shea Feehan and Josh Heath made one save each in goal for the Red Lions, who recorded their eighth league shutout and 10th overall. Jacob Manley had a goal and an assist for Cincy, while Shondel Wright, Jake Stone and Cody Warner had one goal each. Goalkeeper Kyle Tiffany made 13 saves for the Rockets, who were outshot 25-5 in the contest.
Both teams open sectional play tomorrow. The fourth-seeded Red Lions host 13th-seeded Sackets Harbor at 3 p.m. while the 12th-seeded Rockets face No. 5 Lyme at General Brown in a 6:30 p.m. start. In another local contest, also at 3 p.m., No. 3 McGraw (13-1-2) hosts 14th-seeded Madison.
l In Class D girls’ play among CCL schools, regular season champion McGraw is the third seed and has a first round bye.
In a 3 p.m. first round game today, seventh-seed DeRuyter (9-7) plays host to 10th-seed Faith Heritage (7-9). That winner advances to Thursday’s quarterfinal round to face second-seed Copenhagen (14-1-1).
Also on Thursday, McGraw (13-3) will host the winner of today’s Alexandria Bay at Lyme first round contest while fifth-seed Cincinnatus (12-4) plays at fourth-seed Poland. Both games are 3 p.m. starts.
