SUNY Cortland’s Joey Christiano (24) looks to pass in the first period Friday night against SUNY Plattsburgh at Alumni Arena. Plattsburgh pulled out a 7-3 victory.

Jumping out to a 2-0 first period lead was the start SUNY Cortland men were looking for going up against a nationally-ranked hockey opponent.
Visiting fourth-ranked Plattsburgh did not panic, however, scoring four unanswered goals in the second period and going on to post a 7-3 victory over the Red Dragons in Friday’s SUNY Athletic Conference skate at Alumni Arena.
The Red Dragons fell to 1-2 overall and in the conference play, while the Cardinals improved to 2-1 overall and in league play.
The Red Dragons opened up that early 2-0 first period lead with a pair of goals scored just 29 seconds apart.
Junior Jake Saville scored on a wrist shot from the right circle that caromed off Plattsburgh goalie Josh Leis and over the goal line 7:13 into the game, followed by junior Ryan Durocher finding the top right corner with a wrister from the left circle at 7:42.
The Cardinals answered with four goals in the second period to take a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes of play.
Senior Ryan Corry started the run with a slapshot through traffic at 4:55 with the two-man advantage. Sophomore Jared Docking then finished off a short-handed 2-on-1 at the left post at 9:52 to tie the game.
Cardinals freshman Daniel Cobb followed with a wrist shot through a screen at 15:04 after Patrick Jobb won a clean faceoff, and senior Eric Satim finished the scoring when he skated out from behind the goal and beat Jewell with a wrister.
The Red Dragons pulled to within 4-3 at the 5:42 mark of the second period when freshman A.J. Moyer knocked in a rebound of Saville’s shot for his first career goal.
Plattsburgh, however, closed out the game with three goals to seal the win. Jobb netted his first of the night at 8:00 followed by late goals from Mike Grace at 15:58 on the power play and a second from sophomore Jobb at 19:05.
Plattsburgh finished with a 41-22 shot edge, senior goalie Dan Jewell turning aside 34 shots for the Red Dragons.
Cortland returns to Alumni Arena tonight, facing Potsdam at 7 p.m. Oswego topped Potsdam 7-1 on Friday, while in other conference contests Buffalo State nipped Fredonia 2-1 in overtime and Morrisville breezed by Brockport 8-2.
