Ice honors for Red Dragons

SUNY Cortland freshman forward Nick Zappia has been named the SUNY Athletic Conference Men’s Ice Hockey Rookie of the Week.
The rookie from Manlius scored three points on two goals and an assist in a 7-5 home win over Brockport this past Friday night. Zappia netted his first career goal late in the second period to tie the game at 5-5 and added an empty-net insurance goal with 44 seconds to play to seal the win.
The Red Dragons, 2-2 overall and 1-2 in conference play, host Morrisville State on Friday at 7 p.m. in a league contest at Alumni Arena.
— Cortland’s Katie Double has been chosen as the ECAC West Women’s Ice Hockey Goalie of the Week. She stopped 82 of 85 shots on goal for a .965 save percentage and recorded a 1.44 goals-against average in two games last week.
The senior from Farmington turned aside 43 shots to help Cortland salvage a 1-1 overtime tie at Oswego on Saturday, then made 39 saves in a 2-1 loss to the Lakers the following day. Double has been integral to the Red Dragons’ 2-1-1 start this season by compiling a .949 save percentage and 1.87 goals against average.
Cortland will host Elmira College on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. at Alumni Arena.
