Michael Lysyj (11) of SUNY Cortland and Chris Jung (12) of Fredonia battle for the puck as Fredonia goalie Mark Friersen watches Friday night at Alumni Arena. Cortland skated to 4-2 victory.

Being outnumbered didn’t seem to bother the SUNY Cortland men’s hockey team very much Friday night.
The Red Dragons opened the scoring with a pair of short-handed goals in the second period and never looked back in scoring a 4-2 win over Fredonia in their home opener. The win improved Coach Joe Baldarotta’s skaters to 2-3 in the SUNY Athletic Conference and 2-4 overall.
With the hosts two men down at Alumni Arean, junior forward A.J. Moyer opened the scoring 5:20 into the middle stanza, forcing a turnover and beating Blue Devils junior goalie Mark Friesen. Another junior forward, Adam Bevilacqua, made it 2-0 just under four minutes later after picking up a loose puck and skating in on Friesen with senior forward Michael Lysyj.
Senior forward Chris Kaleta’s power-play one-timer from the slot 29 seconds into the third period, his team-high seventh goal of the season, made it 3-0 before the Blue Devils (3-3, 4-4) got goals 25 seconds apart from senior forward Mat Hehr (on a power play) at 1:41 and sophomore forward Stephen Castriota at 2:06 to make it a 3-2 game.
It stayed that way until, with the Fredonia net empty, Kaleta knocked the puck down in the neutral zone and got it to Lysyj, who scored with 17 seconds left for the final margin.
Cortland junior goalie Lyle Rocker made 32 saves to 19 for Friesen as the visitors had a 34-23 shot advantage.
The Red Dragons host Buffalo State at 7 p.m. today back at Alumni Arena.
Cortland Women Upended
UTICA — Cortland women are still searching for their first victory after losing at Utica College 3-1 on Friday night.
Senior Kellie Micillo scored a power-play goal for the Red Dragons with 6:41 left in the third to make it 2-1 before Morgan Reed’s power-play tally with 1:30 left iced it for the Pioneers.
Senior Chelsey Wright and sophomore Abbie Adams picked up assists on Micillo’s goal, while Carmen Johnson and Vanessa Maines scored for the hosts in the first and second periods, respectively. Goalie Deanna Meunier made 34 saves for the Red Dragons (0-3 ECAC West, 0-5 overall) to 21 for Jennifer Hamel of Utica (2-3 league and overall), which outshot its visitors 37-22.
The same two teams were slated to meet at 3 p.m. today in Cortland.
