Corby Reynolds of Cortland High tries to keep Corcoran’s David Minney from getting to his legs during Wednesday’s OHSL match at Shafer Gym. Reynolds won a 4-3 decision, though Corcoran prevailed 34-27.

While five Cortland High wrestlers stayed unbeaten this season Wednesday night, collectively the Purple Tigers lost for the first time in seven matches this season as visiting Corcoran prevailed 34-27 in an OHSL Freedom Division opener.
All five CHS winners are now 7-0.
Cortland’s Eric Reisweber has six pins after flattening Kyle Gabriel in 1:40 at 125 pounds, while Mike Gates took 52 seconds to put Jordan Bowers’ shoulders to the mat at 130 for his fifth pin of the season. Josh Morehouse needed 1:03 to earn his second pin of the year at 215, over Corey Cuipylo.
Corby Reynolds earned a 4-3 decision over David Minney at 160, and Dan Foster was awarded a forfeit at 171, to stay unbeaten for the Purple Tigers.
Corcoran, a collection of wrestlers from the four Syracuse city schools, competed under the Fowler name last season (when it lost to Cortland 51-19) and opened its season with the victory.
“That’s a vastly improved team. All of their kids are athletic, and older,” Cortland coach Dave Darrow said of the Cougars. “There are a lot of kids on that team that had wrestled before but weren’t with Fowler last year. They have all new coaches and are very disciplined.
“Corby beat a very good kid. Overall, though, we’re going to have growing pains,” the CHS coach added. “We have young kids in the middle of the lineup, where the match started. Basically we’re inexperienced, and our young kids are going to be great. But they’re not there yet, and at the lower and middle weights it’s tough to ask a freshman to beat a junior or a senior. We didn’t wrestle real well, and Corcoran is very good.”
The Purple Tigers visit East Syracuse-Minoa Tuesday.
